Carbon Fiber TRD Style Shift Knob with Red Stitching for 4Runner, Tundra, and FJ Cruiser

5th Gen 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium Carbon Fiber Shift Knob

5th Gen 4Runner Carbon Fiber TRD Style Gear Shifter Knob by Car Trim Home – Complete Review and Overview

One of the more aesthetically pleasing mods I’ve done is the carbon fiber shift knob from Car Trim Home. This is one of those mods where the only one that is going to notice it is the driver, and that’s part of the reason why I like it so much.

For anyone with the carbon fiber inlays, this is really the cherry on top. Installation is extremely easy (lefty loosey righty tighty) and the shift knob itself is very affordable, yet made from high-quality material. I honestly did not expect the quality to be this good when I opened the box.

Car Trim Home

Car Trim Home specializes in producing all sorts of little mods. Anything from LED interior lights to TRD Pro style grilles all at an affordable price.

If you’re like me, then you may be skeptical of buying a bunch of cheap parts straight from China. However, all of their products I have installed or seen in person, appear to be fairly decent quality. The shift knob for example is identical to the factory shift knob.

Some of their parts you should be wary of though, such as their leather stitch-it-yourself shift knobs. That said, the TRD style carbon fiber with red stitching is on par with that of an OE piece.

When it comes to their shift knobs they offer two different options. One of them has silver trim, which some 4Runners came from the factory with, or a faux carbon fiber trim which looks absolutely stunning.

Factory VS. Aftermarket

5th Gen 4Runner Factory Shift Knob VS Carbon Fiber Shift Knob

As I mentioned before, the shift knobs from Car Trim Home look identical to the factory shift knobs, and here’s the picture to prove it. If the trim was the same on both of the shift knobs I would not be able to tell the difference between the two.

You can see how my factory shift knob is starting to fade a little bit around the TRD logo. The Car Trim Home shift knob looks and feels brand new (because it is) which is actually a very refreshing upgrade. The two shift knobs weigh the same and the aftermarket one feels a lot better in my hand due to it being brand new.

The carbon fiber shift knob even has red stitching to match the rest of my TRD Off-Road Premium or if you have one; a TRD Pro. The carbon fiber pattern is also identical to the factory pattern in the center console area. These two small details may not be a huge deal, but it’s all about the little things.

Install

I’m not even sure this can be categorized as an install since it takes maybe one minute (due to the number of threads) to complete. Simply twist the factory shift knob in a counterclockwise direction until it comes off. Then, screw the carbon fiber shift knob on. That’s it. No wires, no screws, just twist off and screw on.

My factory shift knob wasn’t too incredibly tight and hopefully, yours isn’t either. When installing the new shift knob, tighten it down until it’s nice and snug. Just like any bolt, you don’t want to over-tighten the shift knob.

Final Thoughts

Carbon Fiber TRD Shift Knob with Red Stitching

Overall I’m super happy with this little cosmetic mod. These carbon fiber shift knobs from Car Trim Home are a very high-quality shift knob replacement for any 5th gen 4Runner. The quality is literally identical to the factory shift knobs at a fraction of the cost.

If you have the factory carbon fiber trim pieces, or the carbon fiber trim pieces from Car Trim Home, then this shift knob is a must. A carbon-fiber shift knob is guaranteed to tie the rest of your interior together.

Ordered three of these from different online retailers (including CarTrimHome) and ALL of them had a stretched and warped carbon fiber pattern. I returned all of them and went with the black knob instead. If you’re lucky enough to have gotten one that doesn’t have a manufacturing defect in the pattern, hold on to it!

I want a large chrome and steel shifter with finger grooves like they made for Hurst shifters back in the day.

Nice little mod. I was honestly disappointed with the knob that came on my 2021 Venture when we bought it last month – it doesn’t have TRD on it like the 2020’s I saw on google (or maybe it was the orp’s). This is perfect – and will match the interior perfect – the knob that should have come with our 4Runner. Would you suggest using some loctite? Did you have trouble getting it to line up right and stay snug?

My 2020 Venture had a regular knob, no TRD letters so you must have seen someone’s mod. Got this carbon fiber knob a month ago and it does look OEM

Don’t use loctite, you’ll never get it off again if you do.

Looks really nice, I was contemplating getting this knob but in the end went withthe FJ Cruiser OEM knob which matches the transfer case knob in the 4Runner.

I did the same thing and am very happy with the matched look.
