6 TRD Pro 5th Gen 4Runner Setups & Their Owner’s Top 5 Must-Have Mods – 4Runner Off-Road & Overland Inspiration in 2022

This Week’s Topic: Army Green 4Runners

Welcome back to another Feature Friday! I hope you all had a great week and are ready to wrap it up with some rare Army Green TRD Pro 4Runners. This suggestion was actually by one of you guys, our readers.

We received an email from John P. who just picked up a 2022 4Runner ORP in Army Green – congrats dude, and welcome to the 4Runner family! He asked us if we could showcase some killer rigs so he could gain some inspiration for his new build.

I was only able to get submissions from 2020 TRD Pro owners, but I’m sure he will find it super helpful! We asked each owner what their Top 5 mods were to help give you an idea of how to start on your new build. Let’s dive in!

The Army Green Color History

Army Green 4Runner with raptor lights and Shrock Works Rock Sliders with Dimpled Tread Plate

Army Green was originally offered on the 5th Gen 4Runner as the “exclusive” TRD Pro color back in 2020. I say “exclusive” because the following year, Toyota did what they had never done with the 4Runner platform, and offered this same color on the 2021 Trail Edition 4Runner. Toyota did do a limited run of Trail models, so the rarity factor was still there for an Army Green 4Runner.

Then, however, the 2022 model year came and Toyota released Army Green to the masses (along with Lunar Rock) by making it available on the Trail Edition, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and the TRD Sport Edition trim levels. This made a lot of future 4Runner owners very, very happy since Army Green is such a desirable color. The level of enthusiasm may not be the same for 2020 TRD Pro owners, though.

Below you will find 6 “OG” Army Green TRD Pro 4Runners showcasing their top 5 mods. These rigs look awesome and have definitely paved the path for more incredible Army Green rigs down the road.

Enjoy guys!

Army Green 55th Gen 4Runner with RRW RR6-H 17x8.5 -25 Offset Wheels

Top 5 Mods

  1. Relations Race Wheels RR6-H (hybrid beadlock) 17×8.5 -25 Offset
  2. BFG KM3 315/70/17 Tires
  3. Cali Raised LED Rock Sliders
  4. Ironman 4×4 USA Front Recovery Points
  5. DRT Body Mount Relocation

What Do You Like About Your Setup?

I love the look and feel of the stance that the 4Runner has with the Relations Race Wheels and BFG KM3 tires. The 4Runner looks so good with these large tires! It’s crazy how substantial it feels, yet I am still able to daily drive it without issue. I also won’t get stuck off-road either, which is a bonus!

285/75/R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on a Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

Top 5 Mods

  1. 285/75/R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers
  2. Rigid Radiance POD (Amber Backlight)
  3. Wind Deflectors
  4. Raptor Lights
  5. Leveling Kit

What Do You Like About Your Setup?

As you can see, I’m not that type of guy who has a bunch of mods on my 4Runner. However, the mods that I do have makes my 4Runner look amazing and aggressive. I like an aesthetic that is simple yet still compliments the bold looks of the 4Runner.

3. Daniel Luquin (@4runnergrinch) – 2020 TRD Pro

KC HiLites M-Rack Roof Rack with Pro6 Lights on Army Green Toyota 4Runner

Top 5 Mods

  1. KC M-Rack Roof Rack w/ Pro6 Lights
  2. ARB Twin Air Compressor Paired w/ Wifey Air System
  3. Midland MTX115 w/ 6db Antenna
  4. Switch-Pros 9100
  5. Rago Rear Window Molle Panels & Shelf

What Do You Like About Your Setup?

What I like the most about my 4Runner is definitely the color! The KC HiLites M-Rack comes in handy with the floodlights on both driver and passenger sides, along with the bright Pro6 lights upfront. When airing up, the ARB compressor paired with the Wifey Air System gets the job done fairly quickly. When airing down, the air system gets all wheels to the same PSI, this is perfect for when the OCD kicks in.

The Midland radio is super clear and with the 6db antenna, the distance you can get is amazing. Everything is wired up to the switch pros 9100, which makes for a clean wiring install and ease of access to toggle things on and off.

Finally, the Rago molle panels keep everything nice and organized. The panels leave you with plenty of space for other cargo in the rear of the 4Runner

Army Green 4Runner with CVT Tents Mt Hood Single-Channel RTT w/ 79" Awning

Top 5 Mods

  1. Overlander Woodworks Custom Drawer System w/ Built-In Fridge Slide, Slide-Out Table, and 2 Drawers w/ Inside Dividers
  2. CVT Tents 56″ Mt Hood Single-Channel RTT w/ 79″ Awning Mounted to Outgear Solutions Low-Profile RTT Crossbars
  3. Goat Armor Magnetic Paint Protection Panels in “Arachnid” Pattern w/ Custom Colorway
  4. ICS Fab Dash Mount w/ Ram Mounts X-Grips & Expedition Essentials Radio/Mic Holder
  5. Shrockworks Rock Sliders w/ Dimpled Tread Plates, No Angle, No Kickout (No longer available)

What Do You Like About Your Setup?

Although my build is still a slow work-in-progress, I love everything about it, even with the few mods I’ve done. With 4Runners in general, there are so many companies out there that allow you to build yours exactly how you want, and still be different from others, even if they have the same exact color and trim you have.

One of the ways I chose to be different is with the Goat Truck Armor. These custom-designed panels are one of my favorite mods because it allows me to stand out while protecting the paint on the trails. When I feel like looking clean and shiny, I just remove the panels. Regardless of your build’s goals, just be yourself, get what you like, and do fun s**t!

Army Green 4Runner with RCI Roof Rack & Westcott Designs ladder

Top 5 Mods

  1. Metaltech 4×4 Sliders
  2. RCI Roof Rack
  3. Westcott Designs Ladder
  4. Dobinson Drawer System
  5. Morimoto XB Headlights & Tail Lights

What Do You Like About Your Setup?

I have owned ten 4Runners in the last 20 years from 3rd Gens to 5th Gens. The TRD Pro roof racks are basically useless, so we went with the RCI and love it. I have the Dobinson Drawers System in my LC200 and love them, so we put a set in the Pro and love them just as much!

6. Dian Sumukti (@trddle.and.tundie) – 2020 TRD Pro

Army Green 4Runner with C4 Fabrication Low Pro Bumper & Warn Winch

Top 5 Mods

  1. Kings 2.5 Ext Travel Adjustable
  2. Morimoto Gen 2 XB Headlights
  3. C4 Fabrication Low Pro Bumper w/ Warn Winch
  4. Work Wheels 17×8.5 -10 | 295/70R17 BFG KM3 Tires
  5. RSG Sliders

What Do You Like About Your Setup?

I like the versatility of the 4Runner as a platform due to the shorter wheelbase and options from the factory. Once key mods are made, it expands the rig’s capabilities greatly. All of the mods for my build were chosen with both function (on and off-road) and aesthetics in mind. Although I’m not yet able to add mods as aggressively as I’d like being that it’s also my daily driver, it’s very capable of taking me to whatever destination I want to get to with confidence.

Final Thoughts

Army Green 4Runner with Goat Armor Magnetic Paint Protection Panels

I’ll be honest with you all, prior to this week’s FF, Army Green 4Runners were pretty low on my list of TRD Pro colors that I liked. I’m happy to say that these rigs definitely made me realize just how awesome of a color Army Green really is, especially with bronze accents – DANG!!!

If you would like to be considered for next week’s Feature Friday, we will be showcasing Roof Top Tents.

We want readers to get inspired by a variety of rigs/products. Submit your build for Feature Friday here to get featured. If you would like to submit your build for next week, include your setup details and an awesome photo that shows it off.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Jon,
Small detail did you paint the Toyota letters red on the front of your rig. Or did you buy them. I’ve been thinking for long time of painting my red also.

I have it on mine. I ordered on Etsy from Premium Cast Vinyl Letter Decals for 2015-2023 4Runner
TRD PRO Grille-Lifetime Warranty/Free Replacement by TVDViny|DecalsLLC. Just watch some people do it first. There’s some good information that helps do it right.

Hey Jon,
Great article and thanks for the shout out. In the beginning it took us a bit for the AG to grow on us, but it quickly did and wouldn’t change it for anything, we love it and my wife would never get rid of it. Unfortunately Toyota decided that the TRD Pro and their unique colors didn’t mean anything anymore and decided to give the pro colors to Corollas, e-bikes or what ever they want to make. It’s ashamed that they went this route. So as goes the Land Cruiser, so goes the TRD Pros☹️.
