Feature Friday: 13 Awesome Barcelona 4Runners Builds To Help Get You Inspired!!

This Weeks Topic: Barcelona Red 4Runners

Another week in the books means another Feature Friday! I hope you all had an awesome week! This week we are taking a break from the mod-specific approach of Feature Friday, to showcase 13 badass Barcelona Red 4Runners. Barcelona Red is the only red currently offer on the 5th gen Toyota 4Runner. While many enthusiasts want to see Radiant Red make its return to the platform in the form of a TRD Pro exclusive color, Barcelona Red holds strong as the only red option for individuals in the market for a new 4R.

This color POPS!! Each owner featured below has turned their rig into something unique to differentiate themselves among the sea of other red 4Runners. There is an exception to this though…It seems that Lo-Pro bumpers are very popular for this group of features. Check out everyone’s rig along with their mods to get inspired for your build! Thanks for reading guys and I’ll catch ya next week!

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

If you want to be featured on Feature Friday next week, submit your build through Trail4R.com/feature.  We are going straight Front End Friday vibes next week. We will be featuring Front End SETUPS next week and the photos will feature only the front end with whatever mods you have for the front of your rig. If this is you, and you love your setup, send in your rig and your lighting details because we want to see it!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

My favorite part about my current setup is definitely the alu-cab awning and tent. The awning has provided many a safe space away from rain and sun and makes a great conversation piece. This would be closely followed by my just go vehicle drawer system which allows me to keep all my go to gear and supplies neatly tucked away and organized.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

What I like most is that it’s mine. I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from other 4runners I follow and pick and choose what fits me. Some of my favorite mods have to be my C4 lopro bumper with the high clearance kit. It really adds a nice sleek look and makes room for more rubber, (One day I’ll decide to run 35s I’m sure). My ditch lights from Baja designs and helped me significantly on back roads where I have been able to see deer from a further distance. Two others have to be my roof rack for added storage (drooling over the roam boxes) and then lastly my remote start. The remote start gets used the most out of everything. Whether is quick escapes from work or warming the 4Runner before dropping my little dude off at school it’s used almost every time I have to leave.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

Just like everybody who visits this website, I’ve scoured countless hours trying to find out what works best for me in my budget and for practicality. Everything that I’ve used I found a purpose for and put it to the test to make sure of its durability and rigidity.

Some of my favorite things that I like about my setup are my roof rack and suspension. The mountain capabilities and design of the UpTop Overland roof rack is amazing. As far as my suspension the Foam Cell Pros from IronMan 4X4 have been phenomenal in all conditions I’ve put it through. I also have to include the lighting upgrades I’ve made with Alpharex’s LUXX headlights and the Diode Dynamic fog lights. From reviewing TRDJON videos on YouTube really helped me narrow down that selection. And I will say with a tinted windshield it made a world of a difference.

In addition, I was able to custom fit the sliding rear cargo deck without being an option when I purchased my rig. Using this has been really helpful with my Coleman stove for camping and tailgating trips. I recently installed the Molle panels, and those have also been great for storing recovery gear as well as groceries (dad life haha).

For future mods, I’d love to build a custom drawer system that would still be able to accommodate my subwoofers and a sliding fridge as well. Just waiting to get a second vehicle so I can make the 4R a full adventure rig.

Interior:

  • Overlander Woodworks Single Drawer System
  • SnoMaster 56L Fridge
  • Aiden James Customs Rear Plate System
  • ARC Light LED Interior Lights
  • ARC Light LED Voltage Booster

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

I like that the setup is rather simple and not overkill with things I don’t need and or will never use. Everything on the vehicle has a purpose, whether it be to see or be seen with lighting on the trail, larger tires and bumpers to handle those obstacles on trails or the fridge to keep food and drinks cold while traveling during the hot summer months in California.

What I like most about the vehicle is the rear bumper by Brute Force Fabrication. It’s one of the cleaner rear bumpers on the market. A lot of bumpers don’t take the body lines of the vehicle into consideration and this one does. It’s also one of the highest clearance bumpers on the market unless you want to chop up cross members and more. With the rear being something I dragged and popped off all the time on the trail, the bumper has cleared those issues.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

What I love most about this setup would definitely have to be the Rago Fabrication rear window molle panels with my 100w 12v solar system from Renogy. Having the system allows us the ability to keep our Dometic fridge running at all times while out on the trails or camping where power is usually unavailable. It makes everything so much easier and hassle-free especially with Renogy’s Bluetooth monitor system. It gives us the ability to adjust charging rates as well as just keep an eye on battery levels, all from our smartphone.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

I’ve always wanted a 4Runner, a vehicle that could help me explore more of what British Columbia has to offer. The red was never my first choice, nor my second. I just stumbled across it one day and it just happened. Looking at my 4Runner now, the color has really grown on me, and honestly, now it’s one of my most favorite colors on a Toyota. I mean the TRD accents are always red right? Coincidence?

This was supposed to be a budget build, or so they always say at the beginning. Countless hours of research went into making sure I had the right parts for my needs. Pricing, availability, and lead times sometimes changed my original “plans”. I am also a huge believer in “buy once, cry once”. I always did research to make sure that the products I was buying and installing were tried and true, and are built to last. A big part of my research and knowledge actually came right here from Trail4Runner. I’ve literally read every single article on here, thank you Brennan and everyone else who has contributed!

This entire process has been a huge learning experience for me. I don’t regret anything that I have done to my 4Runner, but maybe if I were to do it again, I’d do certain things differently. I chose Greenlane Offroad for all my vehicle’s armor. They specialize in all aluminum products, built exceptionally well and durable. The weight savings versus steel armor and knowing that I will never have to worry about rust on those parts was a huge selling point for me. They are also local to where I live and I always try to support local businesses when I can. Baja Designs lighting all around because we all want to channel our inner gun.rnr. The Bilsteins may not be the fanciest setup, but I know that these shocks are built to last and they’ve performed really well so far. I can’t seem to ever decide on a wheel or tire set up, but the 35’s sure was a pain to fit (strictly for mall crawling obviously). The snorkel may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ve always loved the look of the old school Toyota Landcruiser’s with the factory snorkels. It always gives me peace of mind, especially living in a place that has endless rivers and water crossings. Anyways, I won’t ramble on more about every single thing I have bolted on to my 4Runner. If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading all about my 4Runner.

  • Icon 2” rear spring
  • GFC RTT w/ GFC mounting bracket

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

This setup makes life incredibly easy when wanting to do a quick 1-3 day trip. It takes very little time to setup the GFC (if any at all… unlock – unlatch – push up – the end) which makes camping on the go an absolute breeze. I don’t do much prolonged camping so this setup works perfectly for me.

The 5100s have held up surprisingly well for how cheap they are. It makes road driving quality significantly better than stock and keeps the truck from feeling like it’s going to roll over making a left turn. When off-roading, I’ve done some decently sketchy stuff but nothing like rock crawling. The 5100s held up very well too even though they are a more stiff strut. For the more avid off-reading crew, you may want to do something a little better with your suspension.

The Cooper STT Discovery PROs have to be by far the best tire I’ve ever seen. I started with stock, went to 275/70/17 KO2’s, then grabbed myself a killer deal on these Coopers. They have been incredibly good in rough weather terrain like snow, rain, and mud but ESPECIALLY snow. I couldn’t believe how much of a difference it made compared to KO2’s but it just grips so much better. The one downside is the road noise but with bigger tires, heavier equipment, and a rooftop tent, there isn’t much you can do about it besides turn up the music and speak a little louder.

All around I’ve loved this vehicle and have had no complaints. Just towed my entire life in a Uhaul from Washington to Montana with no issues and couldn’t be happier to own this 4Runner.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

With my build out, I have tried to focus on building an extremely capable camping rig to fulfill both of my desires to do some hard offroading/wheeling and long camping trips. Products have been installed, removed, and upgraded over time as I realize that they aren’t the right fit or get worn out. Finding the right companies and products to use and fill both roles has been a really fun adventure.

The suspension setup has been the biggest point of contention and enjoyment for me. Finding that balance between a dedicated rock crawler and long mile expedition vehicle has been a challenge. Luckily I found a suspension company that could meet my needs. Radflo was able to take everything I intended to throw at the truck and build me a custom set of coil overs and shocks. That paired with properly rated springs from Eibach and Dobinsons, I have zero complaints about how the 4Runner handles itself on the road and in the rocks.

All of my other mods have shared a similar story to my suspension setup. Finding the best products I could afford would enable me to enjoy my vehicle. Spending money on quality parts where I could to ensure longevity and protection of my vehicle. Like buying RSG sliders, are they the cheapest slider out there? No, but they are the best and I have proven to myself that I made the right choice every time I slide off a rock and land on a slider that doesn’t move which protects every bit of Red between the wheels.

I am also a big DIY kind of guy, both in terms of installing/wrenching on a vehicle and in terms of making things. I am extremely proud of my secondary battery and drawer system which were designed and made by yours truly. The secondary battery was a lesson in Electrical Engineering that netted me a compact 2kW battery that fits between my drawers and back seat for about the cost of a standard Odyssey. My drawers were the same thing, I saw how much companies like Goose Gear charged for a lightweight system and decided to design and build my own. I get people asking me how I like my Goose Gear drawers and I have to correct them about how they are homemade (I love them FYI, haha).

I’ve built this lifted soccer mom van with a purpose and if you’ve seen any of my pictures I think you’d agree. From wheeling some of the harder trails in Moab, to being blown away by the iconic tails in CO, to Overlanding through my own backyard here in the PNW. I can say with confidence that I am beyond happy with what my 4Runner has become!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?

I think it is the perfect balance between a daily driver and a capable weekend camping vehicle. My fiancé, dog, and I have thoroughly enjoyed building and using this 4 Runner over the past 8 months. When selecting parts I was looking for the best bang for my buck.

I really do like my Alpha Rex Taillights and the way they pop against the red paint. They definitely turn some heads when driving around town. One of the best interior mods was the Canvasback cargo liner. This makes it perfect for my 95 pound (sometimes muddy) Doberman to jump in the rear.

Looking forward to receiving my Dirtcom Trail Swing in a couple of weeks to carry my matching 5th wheel and Rotopax!

Final Thoughts:

I NEVER KNEW how much I liked Barcelona Red, until our Feature Friday this week. That was such a great group of rigs! I liked how even though they were all the same color when new, each owner was able to make theirs, their own, and stand out from one another. I hope that you were able to gain some inspiration for your build and maybe figured out what direction of build you’d like your 4Runner to be after seeing how this week’s features have their rigs set up.

If you would like to be considered for next week’s Feature Friday, we will be showcasing some 4RUNNER FRONT ENDS. We want to get inspired by a variety of setups, submit your build for Feature Friday and you might get featured. If you would like to submit your build for next week, include your setup details and an awesome photo that shows it off. Have a great weekend guys!!
