Floor Mats and Liners – What is the difference? Overview and Review on the Quality/Design of the WeatherTech All-Weather Floor Mats

If you’re looking for a multipurpose upgrade, you should consider upgrading your factory floor mats. When I purchased my 2017 TRD Off-Road 4Runner I received some nice, black carpet mats that are made specifically for the TRD Off-Road 4Runner. They look great and have an embroidered 4Runner TRD Off-Road logo, however, they can really attract some dirt and the black carpet shows every little piece of debris.

There also isn’t any protection from water and mud. To me, you shouldn’t be buying a TRD Off-Road 4Runner, or any 4-wheel drive 4Runner if you aren’t going to use the vehicle for what it was made for – an all-terrain vehicle.

If you are going off-road, the factory floor mats will look filthy quickly and most likely develop a bad smell if any moisture should come in contact with the carpet floor mats. This said I think it is important to upgrade your factory floor mats for protection of your vehicle and also for a little different look.

Floor Mats and Floor Liners – What is the Difference?

Floor liners typically are shaped to go up the sides of the floor and hold in anything that spills on the floor or on the bottom of your shoes (a good example of liners here). They do a really good job of keeping dirt in a designated area and protecting your 4Runner’s carpet.

Floor mats, on the other hand, are not as aggressive in protection and are basically a floor mat that has a bunch of grooves in the mat to hold in a good amount of dirt and debris, but not as much as a floor liner.

Both a floor mat and floor liner will do a much better job than standard carpet floor mats, however, floor liners are the ultimate in protection whereas floor mats provide a middle ground of protection versus aesthetics.

What to Choose – Floor Liners or Floor Mats?

I think the decision is half aesthetics and half function. If you are really wanting an off-road vehicle and plan on going off-road a lot, the floor liners will be a better option. I’ve also heard floor liners can be great if you have kids and dealing with any spills that might occur. If you are wanting more of an all-terrain vehicle that you take to work one day with a suit on and then on the weekends go hit the trail for an adventure, then I’d suggest floor mats as I personally think they look more professional than floor liners, but this is a personal preference.

In summary, I think floor mats look cleaner, more professional, and will work great for a moderate amount of dirt and moisture. Floor liners, on the other hand, don’t look as good to me, but they really serve a purpose of keeping mud, dirt, and water in its place.

WeatherTech All-Weather Floor Mats

WeatherTech makes a lot of good products, and of course, floor mats and floor liners are one of these products. For the sake of this install and my individual preference, I am going to be installing the WeatherTech All-Weather Floor Mats. These floor mats can be purchased for either the 1^st row, 2^nd row, or both the 1^st and 2^nd row as a complete package. There are four different colors offered as well: black, cocoa, tan and grey.

Although selecting a color is your own preference, I put quite a bit of thought into the color I wanted and finally decided upon grey. My interior is black and dark grey. I wanted to lighten up the inside a little bit so grey was a good option in contrast to the stock black carpet mats I have. I also think grey does a great job of hiding dirt and debris in comparison to a color like black or cocoa. Whatever color you pick, go with what you like, however, consider how the color might affect the interior look as well as how that color might hide dirt.

Quality and Design

I think the WeatherTech All-Weather Floor Mats have great design and quality – this should be expected with a product that is made in the USA! The fit is good and looks factory, for the most part, especially the 1st-row floor mats. The material is pretty impressive itself, as it is an advanced rubber-like Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) compound. It is environmentally friendly and has done a great job withstanding the abuse I have put them through thus far (approximately six months). Unlike some floor mats that tend to slide around on you, these mats are designed with anti-skid ridges, so they remain in the designated location.

I think these mats are low profile but have a great design to hold in a lot of dirt and moisture. I do want to mention that in my opinion, the grey mats added a lot of contrast to the interior of my 4Runner that I really liked. As a whole, I believe these floor mats added a lot of protection to my vehicle’s interior as well as improved the aesthetic looks to a more all-terrain like vehicle.

Installation

Installation is incredibly straightforward – simply remove your old floor mats and put in the WeatherTech All-Weather Floor Mats!

There really isn’t much to installing these mats and it is really easy to do. The hardest part of this install is entering your card info at checkout…which is also easy.

Conclusion

I think floor mats are a great way to add protection to your vehicle’s interior, potentially upgrade the interior aesthetics, and also allow you to maintain a professional look inside your vehicle. The WeatherTech All-Weather Floor Mats are a great option and it is also a good thing to support a product made in the USA. I don’t have any complaints on these floor mats and would highly suggest them if you are looking for some. In the case that you don’t want these mats in all the time, then simply throw your stock floor mats in if you aren’t planning on getting dirty and throw in your WeatherTech mats when you are going for an adventure. It is extremely easy to do and worth the money.
