Badass Tents Packout RTT Review

I’ve been ground camping for a while now, and there are two primary reasons I haven’t considered switching to a rooftop tent (RTT). Firstly, the setup and packing process is a bit cumbersome. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, is the added weight. Given that my 4Runner is my daily driver, I’m keen on not adding excessive weight.

When I first learned about lightweight RTTs, I was immediately intrigued. After all, the idea of a sub-100-pound RTT seemed like a game-changer. For a daily driver that can also accommodate extended overlanding trips, this category of tent is the answer.

Construction

The sturdiness of this rooftop tent is derived from its 3″ tall extruded aluminum frame (American-made) which can support up to 500 lbs. The exterior of the top shell is made of Rhinotek textured rubberized cover for high abrasion and water resistance and effectively shields the inside of the tent from the elements.

Rip-Stop 420D Nylon Oxford Fabric is used for the side canvas and has a robust, well-crafted feel. While only time can truly determine its durability against the elements, it’s held up well so far. I will certainly update this review with any long-term findings.

As for the interior, the canvas boasts a blackout coating, creating a pitch-black environment when all the windows are closed or zipped. This lets you sleep soundly whether it’s night or day.

The floor is made of a one-piece aluminum/plastic composite, effectively reducing the tent’s overall weight while maintaining structural integrity. It feels very sturdy and has stood up well to our camping adventures thus far.

Air Flow

This tent is equipped with two openings, one on each side, along with a large opening at the back. Depending on your camping arrangement, any of these three openings can serve as entry points to the tent.

Each opening consists of two layers: a mesh screen and the rip-stop 420D nylon fabric. Both layers are designed to be rolled off to allow for maximum airflow, and the mesh can be rolled down separately to protect against bugs.

The current version doesn’t include the feature to roll and secure the windows at the top. Fortunately, the 2024 model will offer the capability to roll up and secure these windows.

Set Up

The set up process for this tent is quick and straightforward! It comes with two heavy-duty, gas-assisted struts on the sides for quick deployment. This is especially useful when you arrive at the campsite late in the evening.

Mattress

The mattress included with this tent is a 1″ sleeping pad, not a complete mattress. While functional, it’s rather thin and could be more comfortable. Badass recommends upgrading to a 3″ memory foam mattress (which you’ll need to buy separately) for the best comfort experience with this tent.

Ladder

The tent doesn’t include a ladder, but one can be added at the time of purchase for $120. The ladder is made out of aluminum with a maximum load capacity of 330 lbs. (150 kg). Its telescopic design makes it convenient to use and compact for storage.

The ladder attaches to the tent with two U-brackets, securely bolted to the T-channel on the side of the tent. These brackets are adjustable, allowing you to move them to either side depending on your specific setup.

Accessories

There is also an available shoe/storage bag for this tent. It’s made of durable 400 denier ripstop material and can accommodate two pairs of shoes and flip-flops. Similar to the ladder, it also mounts via the T-channel slots on the side of the tent.

This is a great way to keep dirt outside of the tent and make sure nothing crawls into your shoes.

Badass Tents Vs. Inspired Overland

Another solid contender in the lightweight RTT category is Inspired Overland. So, let’s compare the two (we’ll label Badass Tents as “BA” and Inspired Overland as “IO”, respectively).

Outer Shell & Fabric

• BA: Utilizes RHINOTEK® rubberized cover with push-in buttons and locking clips. This cover material provides durability and weather resistance. The tent’s fabric is made of 420D Ripstop Nylon Oxford, known for its robustness and tear resistance.
• IO: Features a PVC cover akin to soft tonneau covers, sealed using zippers and locking clips for weather protection. The fabric comprises of 2000D polyester oxford, offering a balance of strength and weather resistance.

Windows, Doors & Storage

• Both RTTs offer a similar design with multiple windows featuring mesh screens for ventilation and bug protection. However, in terms of internal storage, the IO takes the edge with more roof pockets for better organization.

Ladder & Design

• Ladder: IO includes a telescoping ladder whereas BA requires a separate purchase.
• Design: IO uses telescopic poles for extra support in inclement weather. BA relies on heavy-duty struts primarily, providing weight savings and simplicity. The latter also offers a T-slot channel for accessory mounting while the former does not.

Mattress Quality

• IO: Comes with a thicker 1.5″ mattress and an anti-condensation mat, enhancing sleeping comfort and moisture prevention. There are likely generic options available to upgrade.
• BA: Comes with a 1″ mattress without an anti-condensation mat. However, you can upgrade to a 3″ memory foam mattress from Amazon which fits perfectly.

Construction & Warranty

• BA: All-aluminum extrusion frame, made in the USA, 3-year warranty.
• IO: PVC and canvas, manufactured overseas, 1-year warranty.

Assembly

• BA: Offers self-assembly to save on shipping costs and gain insight for potential trail maintenance.
• IO: No DIY assembly; You have the option to pick up the RTT from their warehouse or have it shipped.

Issues & Concerns

• BA: My only concern is the limited number of straps/bungees to secure the mesh screens or window covers. However, Badass has confirmed that they’ve addressed this issue in the upcoming iteration.
• IO: Brenan’s review highlighted concerns about zipper quality and functionality, particularly in closing the tent. Some of these may have been fixed since.

In summary, BA emphasizes sturdiness, US manufacturing, and DIY assembly, whereas IO focuses on comfort features and additional support structures.

Final Thoughts

The Packout’s impressive lightweight design makes it perfect for a daily driver. It’s low-profile enough to keep on the vehicle year-round. It has all of the staples that make for a solid RTT; quick setup, blackout interior, and ample airflow. It’s also proudly made in the USA and backed by a reliable 3-year warranty.

In terms of sleeping capacity, the tent comfortably accommodates two adults and a child at best. Anything beyond that would likely be a struggle, in my opinion. For the weekend warrior, this is undoubtedly a strong contender in the lightweight RTT market.
