Aftermarket Gunmetal Wheel Setups For The 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner – 12 Unique Looks To Inspire Your Off-Road & Overland Build in 2022
This Week’s Topic: Gunmetal Aftermarket Wheels
Welcome back to another Feature Friday! If you missed last week’s FF, we took a look at front bumper accessories. For this week’s Feature Friday, we continue inspiration for modifications in the form of aftermarket wheels, specifically in the gunmetal color.
As I stated in a previous Feature Friday covering 4Runner bronze wheels – bronze wheels are the new black, plain and simple. Black wheels are still a very popular option for aftermarket wheels but bronze is currently the crowd favorite. We are also starting to see some rigs step out of the norm in terms of wheel color choices. There are now options for red, white, blue, and shoot, I’ve even seen some green wheels as well!
Gunmetal wheels look great on a variety of 4Runner colors, especially Super White and Magnetic Grey Metallic. You wouldn’t think that grey wheels on a darker grey truck would look good, but boy would you be mistaken!
Think of gunmetal as a slightly lighter shade of black mixed with a little bit of raw machined silver. If the color name alone doesn’t sound awesome enough, wait until you see our featured rigs below! We showcase a variety of different gunmetal wheel designs, offsets, and brands to inspire you for future build ideas.
If you are looking for even more wheel options, check out our massive buyer’s guide of 4Runner wheel options – with 64 different options!
Enjoy!
4Runner Gunmetal Wheels
1. Ryan Lau (@4runnersaurus) – Stealth Custom Series
Wheel Details
- Model: Ray 10 | Matte Gunmetal
- Size: 17X9
- Offset: -38mm
- Price: ~$295/wheel

The SCS Ray10 design is classic in my opinion. Some may knock the faux beadlock aesthetic, but that doesn’t bother me. Paired with the black bolts that I swapped the silver ones for, they actually make the tires look a little meatier than they are.
I like that for being such a wide wheel, they don’t weigh a ton, the 17×9 size also fits 285/295 width tires perfectly. I’m a sucker for matte-colored things, so these wheels were perfect for my build.
2. Mark S. (@bao.rnr) – Method Race Wheels
Wheel Details
- Model: 703 | Gloss Titanium
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: 0mm
- Price: ~$300/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
Originally when I looked at the Method Race Wheels “Trail” line, I liked all the 700 series wheels. Then, Method released a new “Gloss Titanium” color for their 703 wheel design. Not only was their 703 my favorite wheel design, but I liked the new gloss color as well.
I had the OEM black TRD Pro wheels before but those seem to be on a lot of white 4Runners. I decided to try a gunmetal color and I love the look and color of these wheels. The gloss finish makes them always look clean (and easy to clean).
Also, Method’s trail line of wheels features their patented “bead grip” technology. This allows the wheel to grip the tire better with more grooves and thus allowing the tires to be aired down to super low PSI if needed (I’ve only gone down to 12 PSI).
3. Lauren Jerry (@_.live.laugh.lauren._) – Stealth Custom Series
Wheel Details
- Model: Stealth 6 | Matte Gunmetal
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: -10mm
- Price: ~$235/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
I love how unique these gunmetal wheels are in both style and in color. You rarely see any gunmetal wheels on the road. They hide dirt well and are easy to clean. Wheels are one of the best ways to change the whole look of your rig and stand out. So fittingly, I chose something different than everyone else. Stealth Custom Series is a great brand with great quality. These rims are one of my favorite things about our 4Runner!
4. Brenan Greene (@trail4r) – Relations Race Wheels
Wheel Details
- Model: RR7-H | Matte Gunmetal
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: -12mm + 1.25″ Spacers
- Price: ~$285/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
The large quantity of spokes with the beveled edge makes for an epic wheel design. There aren’t too many wheels like this on the market and they are available in three colors; matte gunmetal, matte black, and matte bronze. I also like the RR6s by Relations Race Wheels. They are a similar design, just fewer spokes, and no beveled edge.
5. Michael Devecchio (@mammoth4runner) – MVX Off-Road
Wheel Details
- Model: VX80 | Matte Graphite Grey
- Size: 17X9
- Offset: -12mm
- Price: ~$339/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
I just love the old-school look! I’ve always loved the more full-wheel look and the inclusion of holes in the design gives them an even more aggressive look that I’ve always wanted out of my wheels. The color scheme goes perfectly with my Magnetic Grey 4Rrunner.
6. Ashley Oldham (@okiegirl_overland) – Fuel Off-Road
Wheel Details
- Model: D619 Podium | Matte Gunmetal
- Size: 17X9
- Offset: +1mm
- Price: ~$290/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
I searched a long time for a standard 6-spoke look and kept coming back to these wheels. I’ve had in my mind since the moment I purchased my 4Runner, that I wanted that sleek blackout look and these fit the bill perfectly. They are dark but with just enough color, and variance to give it pop on a very otherwise black vehicle.
I have abused them on very rocky terrain and they’ve still held up even with substantial damage to the lip of the wheel. I will definitely go with Fuel wheels if I ever have to make another wheel purchase.
7. Jaymerson Agraan (@Jt4r__) – Icon Alloys
Wheel Details
- Model: Alphas | Satin Black/Machined
- Size: 17×8.5
- Offset: 0mm + 1.5″ Spacers
- Price: ~$340/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
I know these wheels aren’t the typical SCS, Summit, or and RRW setup. However, in my opinion, these wheels look just as good. The Icon wheel lineup is affordable and they offer a variety of different colors, sizes, and even lug patterns.
I really love how well the satin black/machined look pairs with the silver and black theme I have going on with my 4Runner. Cleaning these wheels isn’t fun, but it’s worth it in the end because who doesn’t love some clean wheels?
8. Gene (@drty_t4r) – VTX
Wheel Details
- Model: Rogue | Satin Grey
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: -10mm
- Price: ~$160/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
The VTX Rogue wheels are aesthetically very pleasing and they look great on any rig. In addition, these wheels are built really strong and have held up to various off-road terrains. Last but not least, they are priced competitively.
9. Connie Khu (@t4rgurl) – Relations Race Wheels
Wheel Details
- Model: RR6-H | Matte Gunmetal
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: -12mm
- Price: ~$285/each
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
These wheels capture a look that looks good both on the trail and on the street. The hybrid model gives you the option to add a protection ring or a forged beadlock ring. The -12mm offset definitely adds that aggressive look to my rig. Overall, the originality of these wheels got game!
10. James Turcato (@wreckit.4r) – Method Race Wheels
Wheel Details
- Model: 704 Trail Series | Matte Black
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: 0mm
- Price: ~$250/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
What I like most about these wheels is Method’s Bead Grip technology. This allows the deflation of tires down to pressures that may previously have required beadlock wheels.
The Bead Grip tech has given me a lot more confidence in airing down to significantly lower pressures compared to my stock rims. You can really feel that tire bead seated and in place at really low pressures. I’ve aired down on these rims all the way to 8-10 psi for mogul/rock crawling and not once had a tire bead fail. I can vouch that Bead Grip is not a gimmick.
11. Noah Richey (@midnyte_rnr) – Stealth Custom Series
Wheel Details
- Model: Gen5 | Matte Gunmetal
- Size: 17X9
- Offset: -38mm
- Price: ~$280/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
I love the retro 5 spoke design of these wheels. When paired with the deep dish design, it really makes these wheels stand out! SCS simply knocked it out of the park with these! I chose gunmetal because I feel that black wheels are overdone. The gunmetal ties the whole build together and I wouldn’t change a thing!
I’d highly recommend any of the wheels from SCS, as I feel they are one of the highest quality and best-looking wheels on the market today!
12. Laura Mattson (@The.Kessel.Runner) – Black Rhino
Wheel Details
- Model: Rapid in Matte Brushed Gunmetal
- Size: 17X8.5
- Offset: 0mm
- Price: ~$310/wheel
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
When I ordered the wheels last October they were one of the newest styles offered from Black Rhino, so they were still pretty unique. They are a lighter weight wheel, made using Flow Formed Technology, and weigh 23 pounds each. The gunmetal matches Magnetic Gray Metallic really well. Between the color and design, the wheels add to the uniqueness of my 4Runner build.
Final Thoughts
Don’t sleep on gunmetal wheels. In a world full of black and bronze wheels being the top choice for consumers, gunmetal wheels were a refreshing sight to see on these 11 rigs. You can see how they pair well with a variety of rig colors, whether it be Super White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, etc. I hope you’ve been inspired to potentially run gunmetal wheels next over bronze or black for your rig, I know I certainly have!
We want readers to get inspired by a variety of rigs/products. Submit your build for Feature Friday here to get featured. Next week we will be showcasing TRD OFF-ROAD Trim 4Runners and asking owners what their Top 5 Mods are. If you would like to submit your build for next week, include your setup details and an awesome photo that shows it off.
Have a great weekend everyone!
I’ve never understood why people attach shackles to tie-down points. Tie-down points can’t be used for extractions because they’re not designed to handle the loads imposed with getting a vehicle unstuck. And, if you tear one out, chances are you’ll damage your radiator. It doesn’t even look good, and it tells people that you don’t know what you’re doing.
17″ Fuel Vector D601
The stock Gunmetal TRD wheels, which I have, are easily the cleanest looking
You missed the best wheels of all…… by far. The one-piece forged 20lb Titan 7 T-AK1 and T-AK2. Lighter and stronger than any cheap cast wheel listed above.
Depending on the process, cast wheels are up to the challenge. Typically, other parts break when offroad before the wheels fail. And, if your wheels fail, maybe going a little slower would be advisable.
It’s too bad that Titan is extremely limited in design, offset and color options. A negative 8 offset isn’t quite enough, and you shouldn’t have to use cheap spacers to make up the difference.
Why you think these are “the best” is beyond me. But that’s what makes a horserace.

Nice selection, it’s great that there are so many options that work with the variety of tire sizes.
I’m surprised to see that the TRD Rock Warrior wasn’t represented but I understand since the 6 bolt version is scarce. Look for PRT45-35010 – I think they look awesome, if you can find them.
Thanks
