Feature Friday: 20 Wheel/Tire Combos To Consider For Purchase In 2022 For Your 4Runner
This Weeks Topic: Wheel/Tire Combinations
Are you tired of your 4Runner looking boring in the Starbucks drive-thru?? Well, do I have just the Feature Friday for you!! This Friday we are looking at 20 wheel and tire setups for the 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner. What I loved about this week’s features is that we had some repeating brands, BUT, I don’t think there was a repeating wheel/tire set up. Wheels and tires are a way to subtly set your 4Runner apart from the thousands of others that look just like it. Take our featured rig, for instance, @supreme4runnin, BLUE WHEELS!! How sick is that??
Now, wheels and tires as a mod aren’t just made for looks. As we know Toyota sells 97.3% (I did the math, don’t challenge me), of its 4Runners with the dullest street tires for a 4WD. Now for casual weekend trips to the lake or mountains on a well-maintained road, that’s completely understandable. Now for those of us that ask a bit more from our 4Runners, a more aggressive tire tread and a wider wheel/ offset for additional ground coverage is a must to conquer heavier terrains. In addition to this, stock tires are usually a Load C rating and many users upgrade to a Load E rating. Load E allows the 4Runner to properly hold a bit more weight without stressing the tires out too much and overloading them. This is good for those who have a rooftop tent, drawer system, trailer, basically a fully built-out overland rig. They also are a bit more durable and take a bit longer to wear out.
I hope you gain some inspiration and knowledge from the features listed below. Feels free to follow them all on Instagram as well! Catch ya guys next week!
Enjoy and have a great weekend!
If you want to be featured on Feature Friday next week, submit your build through Trail4R.com/feature. We are going to showcase entire rigs next week with a very popular Toyota Color, Cement Gray. We will be featuring CEMENT GRAY 4RUNNERS next week and are looking for awesome rigs to showcase. If this is you, and you love your setup, send in your rig and your lighting details because we want to see it!
20 Must Have Wheel/Tire Combinations
1. Ryan Lau (@4runnersaurus) SCS/Yokohama
SETUP:
WHEELS
- SCS Ray10 17×9 -38mm Offset
- Around $260 per wheel
TIRES
- Yokohama Geolandar MT G003
- 285/70/17 – Load E
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I love this wheel/tire combo – it gives my rig just enough flare but remains understated (I’m not a flashy person). The Yokohama tires have eaten up whatever terrain I’ve thrown at them and the wheels complete the rugged look. Fun fact, I bought these wheels second-hand from a friend with a fair amount of trail rash and scuffs – check out my write-up on trail4runner.com (link in IG bio) where I walk through refurbishing them!
2. Mark Clark (@3mullet.runner) KMC/Kumho
SETUP:
WHEELS
- KMC Wheels Trek545 17×9 -12mm
- Bronze with black lip
- Spidertrax 1.25″ Spacers
TIRES
- Kumho Tires USA MT71
- 295/70/17 – Load E
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I like that they are an aggressive look for a mildly built 4runner. The wheels really stand out with the MGM paint.
3. Jonathan Hong (@_jonny_04) SCS/Nitto
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Stealth Custom Series Ray10
- 17 x 9 -38 offset
TIRES
- Nitto Ridge Grappler
- 305/70/17 Load- E
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
What I like most about this setup is not having to run wheel spacers in order to achieve the “poke” I was looking for. That’s most important to me as I don’t want to have to worry about another part needing to be inspected and torqued after each trip. Aside from looks; the tire and wheel seem to be easily balanced as I have not heard any complaints from the techs at the tire shop I go to.
4. James Turcato (@wreckit.4r) Method/Toyo
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Matte Titanium Method 704s
- Cost: $280 per
- Diameter: 17
- Width: 8.5
- Offset: 0
- Backspacing: 4.75
- Bolt pattern: 6×5.5
- Weight: 32.1
- Max load: 2650
TIRES
- 34” Toyo Open Country AT3s
- Cost: $285 per
- Size: 305/70:17
- Load Range: E
- Weight: 64lbs
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
The 704s look great while being pretty modest in appearance. The 704 Trail wheels have a 12 spoke design in a matte grey finish.
What really drew me to purchase these wheels was Method’s Bead Grip technology which allows deflation of tires down to pressures that would previously have required beadlock wheels.
The Bead Grip tech has given me a lot more confidence in airing down to significantly lower pressures compared to my stock Toyota rims.
For example, I was able to confidently air down to 10 psi for a high speed desert drive on a really washboarded road in Death Valley. Maybe it’s a placebo effect, but I thought I felt more bite taking hard-fast turns at that low tire pressure.
In addition, I also really like that these wheels are really easy to clean compared to other wheels I have had. All the spoked are pretty flat and every nook and cranny are accessible. Therefore every crevice can be wiped clean with a towel.
In terms of tires, I have had a few different all-terrains throughout building my 4Runner. I started with Falken Wildpeaks, moved to BFG KO2s, to now Toyo ATIIIs.
I really like the Toyo Open Country ATIIIs. The tread pattern is aggressive compared to other all-terrains I have seen. The tread blocks are large and spaced pretty far apart almost like a mud terrain. Flat out the Toyos look great and perform really well.
After moving up a size from my previous KO2s, I was looking for another tire with a similar 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) rating. I do a lot of driving in the snow for snowboarding and occasional off-roading in the snow so 3PMSF was critical in selecting tires. These Toyos fit those criteria and had the exact size tire I was looking for.
The Toyos are also really quiet on pavement and comparable to my previous KO2s even though the Toyo’s tread blocks are spaced further apart.
The Toyos hold up well off-roading too. My KO2s were prone to chipping and these Toyos have not shown any damage off-roading as of yet. The Toyos also handles well in low traction environments such as snow, sand, and mud. The siping and more spaced out tread blocks evacuate debris a lot more effectively than my previous KO2s. Overall the Toyo Open Country ATIIIs were definitely a worthwhile performance upgrade.
5. Tanner Hedrick (@blue.ridge.rnnr) Relations Race Wheels/Falken
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Relations Race Wheels RR5-V Matte Bronze
- 17” x 8.5” -12 mm offset
- 22 lbs
- $260 per wheel
TIRES
- Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 255/80/17 E load
- 33.1” diameter, 10” section width
- 52 lbs
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
Relations Race Wheels makes some awesome, strong, and lightweight wheels for our Toyotas. At just 22lbs these are lighter than all the factory 4Runner wheels, and on the low end of the spectrum for a 17” wheel. The 8.5” width and -10 offset give a really nice stance, and is about in line with the fenders. The matte bronze is an awesome color- at times it looks almost black, but in the sunlight, it really pops and it takes on a gold appearance.
I have the RRW wrapped in some Falken Wildpeak 255/80 “skinnies”. I originally got these tires because I wanted a 33” tire that would be in spec for my 7” wide factory wheels. I couldn’t be happier with how they’ve performed. On-road, they are quiet, track straight, and have never once slipped in wet or icy conditions. Off-road they perform awesome for an AT- the 33” diameter gives me enough ground clearance and they clear mud from the treads well. The E load also wears super well, and after more than 20k miles I’m still at 15/32nds of tread depth. Overall this tire and wheel combo is very lightweight for a 33” and looks and performs great!
6. Austin Denike (@austindenike) FN Wheels/Falken
SETUP:
WHEELS
- FN Wheels Konig Six Shooter matte black
- 17×8″
- 0MM Offset
- 4.5″ backspacing
TIRES
- Falken Wildpeak AT3W
- 285/70/17
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I love the look of the six shooters the center wheel has no over the top decal or branding. They are very light, at the time of purchase they were some of if not THE lightest wheels at this price.
I almost went with K02s for my tire but had heard a few negative reviews from some buddies, the wildpeaks take me wherever I need to go!
7. Ray O (@xclusive_808t4r) Method/Toyo
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Method 315
- 17X9
- 0 Offset
TIRES
- Toyo MT
- 285/75/17
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
Running 285/75/17 (34s) means I don’t need to regear. As for the wheels, I chose Method’s, 315 in gold. I had to try something different but looks like gold wheels are very popular these days.
8. Jared Johnson (@txhillrider) Fuel/Cooper
SETUP:
WHEELS
- G2 Axle 1.25″ Spacers
- Fuel Off-Road Nitro 6 in Bronze,
- -12 off-set
TIRES
- Cooper Tires AT3 XLT
- 285/70/17
- E-Rated
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I wanted a slightly unique color and you don’t see too many white 4Runners with bronze wheels, so I went with the Fuel Nitro 6 in bronze. The negative off-set has given my 4Runner a much more aggressive stance especially with the 1.25″ wheel spacers. Also, it prevents the face of the wheel from getting damaged since the outer rim has gotten some good trail rash.
I can’t speak highly enough about the Cooper Tires AT3 XLT. They are an E-Rated, all-terrain tire with a mildly aggressive tread pattern and a side wall that is more aggressive than most AT tires. With roughly 40k miles on my set, they still perform perfectly on and off-road. I think the biggest test for these tires was Top of the World Trail in the rain and snow back in April this year. These tires didn’t even flinch at the rough and wet terrain. I highly recommend these tires for anyone looking for an all-terrain tire that can handle rough trails and go the distance on-road.
9. Carlo Donzelli (@trail_runn4r) FN Wheels/Klever
SETUP:
WHEELS
- FN Wheels – Countersteer Type X
- Color: Matte Black
- Diameter: 17″
- Width: 8″
- Bolt pattern: 6×139.7mm
- Offset: -10mm
- Backspacing: 4.1″
- Weigh: ~21 lbs
- Price: $899 for a set of 4 shipped.
TIRES
- Klever R/T KR601
- Size: LT285/70R17
- Load Range: E (10 Ply)
- Load Index: 121/118R
- Overall Diameter: 32.99”
- Weigh: ~62 lbs
- Price: $200
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
The selling point of this setup for me was a very reasonable price compared to other options from popular brands, but still delivering great looks and performance. The wheels are simple and light, the tires look very aggressive, and aren’t too heavy either. I have been running this setup for 6 months now and I’m really liking it. The E rating gives me confidence when offloading in the Colorado Rockies!
10. Mark S (@nova.t4r) Method/Falken
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Method Race Wheels 703 in Gloss Titanium color
- 17×8.5″ with a 0 offset
- $300
TIRES
- Falken Wildpeak AT3W
- 285/70/17
- $250
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
My 4Runner originally game with the silver TRD Off Road wheels from the factory. One of the first things that I purchased for my 4Runner was a new set of wheels and tires (now that I think back, I should have done the lift first, but too late now) and my mind was set on having the black TRD Pro wheels on my white 4Runner. I did some research and it seemed like the majority of folks either suggested going with BFGoodrich KO2, Falken Wildpeak, or Nitto tires. Based upon my research, it seemed like the Wildpeak tires are a bit better in rain and snow (I haven’t tried the others but they may be just as good in rain/snow). I ended up purchasing a new set of black TRD Pro wheels and stock size 265/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires to go along with them. After I got them mounted, I started to notice that in my area there seemed to be a lot of white 5th gen 4Runners with black TRD Pro wheels. Once I lifted my 4Runner, I decided it was time to get larger tires and look into different wheels as well. This time I was focused on some sort of gunmetal color wheels, but also wanted to stick with the Wildpeak tires as they worked well during the last snow season. One day Method Race Wheels release their 703 trail series wheels in a new color, “Gloss Titanium”. I ended up loving the color and the gloss finish makes it easier to clean (and it isn’t overly shiny). One of the best features of the Method trail series wheels is that they have a patented bead grip technology. The rim of the wheel has grooves that allow it to grab the tires better, which allows the tires to be aired down to a very low PSI when offroading. I’ve only aired down to 15 PSI and they were great, but I’ve heard of folks airing down to 8 or 9 PSI with no problems. I also like the 0 offset as the wheel/tire combo seems flush with the fender. Maybe a little negative offset wouldn’t hurt though (I’d like them even more if they were a -10 or -18 offset), but I can eventually add spacers later on.
11. Rommel Lalunio (@supreme4runnin) Fuel/Toyo
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Fuel Variant FFT ( Flow Form Technology)
- 17×9 -12offset
- Price: TBD
- Color: Blue
TIRES
- Toyo open county AT III
- 315/70/17
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I love how these new Fuel Variant wheels have a cross of a Sporty/off-road look. They have excellent specs for the 5th gen 4R / Toyota platform.
12. Dom Cometa (@4runlbc) SCS/Mickey Thompson
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Stealth Custom Series BR6
- Matte Jet Black w/Blaze Bronze Lip
- 17×9 -38mm 6×139.7
- $245 each
TIRES
- Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3
- 315/70/17
- $345 each
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I like the aggressive look and stance but also like to keep it simple. I’ve been saying one more upgrade and I’m done, but every time I hit the trails or go camping I find something else I need. From going on night runs, nose diving on a sudden dip in Anza-Borrego, and getting stuck in mud. All are reasons why I have my current set up. In regards to the tires, all I can say is they handle well in dirt, smooth on the highway and minimal road noise for a mud-terrain. 10/10 would highly recommend.
13. Byron Victa (@BYRUNNR) SCS/Nitto
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Stealth Custom Series Ray10
- 17×9 -38 Off Set
TIRES
- Nitto Ridge Grapplers
- 315/70/17
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
The story behind this set of tires originated from a day trip with friends involving gun-shooting shenanigans. The demise of my Toyo RTs were caused from driving through very sharp rocks. Fortunately for TPMS technology, we noticed that tire PSI began to dramatically drop while we were still driving through a populated town. The time was nearly 4:30 pm and we had to scour for the nearest tire shop. With very little time to spare, we found an America’s Tire shop within 10 minutes and arrived just in time – birthing the beginning of my current tire setup.
My previous tire setup were a set of Toyo Open Country R/Ts in 295/70/17. Both tire setups performed very similarly when driving through mall parking lots. For those of you on the fence when choosing between these Nitto RG in 315s and BFG KO2s in 315s, I have noticed Nittos sit much taller when compared to BFG – while the KO2s are slightly wider. These tires run very quiet in my opinion. Airing down to 15psi was so much squishy-squash fun when hitting trails. Knowing myself, these tires will see more pavement than dirt.
14. Dustin Smith (@calrunr) VTX/BFG
SETUP:
WHEELS
- VTX Terra in Satin Black
- 17×9, -10
- 1.25 inch Spidertrax spacers
TIRES
- 295/70/17
- BF Goodrich KM3’s
- 295/70/17
- E rated
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I’ve had the VTX Terras for a few years. They’re the only aftermarket wheels I’ve purchased for the 4 Runner, and I haven’t really had the urge to switch them out for the latest style. Why? The Terras are a subtle design, akin to more classic five-star wheels, which I love. I added some custom made (by me) TRD spoke stickers for some flare, and they’ve become one of the defining visual characteristics of the rig. The offset of the wheels is -12, so I added Spidertrax wheel spacers to give them a bit more poke. And with the Fox rear shocks, you also need that space for the wheels to clear the reservoirs. I haven’t had any issues with the spacers, other than the lugs don’t seem to have a ton of threads to hold onto. Currently looking for solutions there.
Gluing the rig to the ground, are a set of 295/70/17 BF Goodrich KM3’s. The KM3’s are just the right level of aggressive look that I wanted, with great mud handling, grip on the rocks, and even decent performance in the snow. Top that off with very little road noise and I think you’ve got a pretty rad, well-rounded tire. I like the 295’s as they give me just enough size for most of the off-roading I do. They also fit the proportions of the rig, and have a relatively subtle look on the road. I’ll likely go to 35’s at some point, but that’s a bit more of a commitment (re-gearing and such), and when it will shift to adventure-only rig vs. my primary vehicle.
15. Dian Sumukti (@trddle.and.tundie) Work/BFG
SETUP:
WHEELS
- Work Wheels Meister S1HC Bronze
- 17×8.5 -10
- $460/ea
TIRES
- BF Goodrich MT T/A KM3
- Load Range E,
- 295/70R17
- $343/ea
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I was previously running AT tires and although happy with the overall performance, its performance for rock crawling left something to be desired. I decided to make the switch to MT tires and chose BFG KM3’s because it’s known for its durability with one of the toughest sidewalls in the industry, and the ability to withstand the rough desert terrain and resist punctures. The blocks on the tread and sidewall grip everything in its path, especially when properly aired down. And although noise was not a concern for me, the KM3’s are relatively quiet both on and off road.
16. Ashley Oldham (@okiegirl_overland) Fuel/Cooper
SETUP:

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
While searching through the endless sea of wheel choices, I kept going back to the Fuel Podiums. I am super happy with my choice as I don’t see a lot of people running them and they look sharp as well. From the get go the STT Pro was my tire choice. They look super aggressive, handle amazing and take a beating on the trail, and draw attention everywhere I go.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
To date, this is definitely my favorite setup on the 4Runner and I don’t anticipate any changes in the future. In order to accommodate the significant offset, I do have a body mount chop (BMC), hammered the pinch welds, did the high clearance cut, and am running aftermarket JBA upper control arms (UCAs) at 4.2 casters. Even then, I do sometimes rub at full lock when wheeling. Prior to the -38 MM offset, I also ran the same SCS wheels in the -10 MM offset, but wanted a bit more stance. I didn’t have to make any changes to the rig between the two offsets and I’m very pleased with how aggressive the rig currently sits.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SETUP?
I’ve ran the KM3’s for quite a while and love em. Contrary to the aggressive look, I’ve found the on road noise is rather minimal. Off-road, the tires perform exceptionally in all terrain but snow. Luckily I am only wheeling in the snow when I choose to do so. The tires GRIP and the sidewalls are super strong. I will definitely purchase again when the time comes.
The Ryder Offroad entire line is exceptional but I was specifically drawn to the RR03. The textured matte bronze is unique and fun to shoot. The bronze creates a nice contrast against the magnetic gray of the truck. The wheels have held up as expected, even through some tough wheeling. I’m really looking forward to what the future holds for them and eagerly awaiting some more aggressive offsets. Ryder is certainly a brand focused on the needs of the community.

Man…I really need to get bigger tires on my 4Runner. I am still rocking the stock TRD Pro wheels with Nitto Terra Grapplers 265/70/17, after seeing all of these rigs, I am in desperate need of an upgrade. But here is the thing, my tires work PERFECT for what I use my 4Runner for. Sure some larger tires and a little more offset of a wheel would make my rig look badass, but I can hold off just a little bit longer (not much though).
Guys, I hope you all have an incredible weekend and I look forward to next week’s Feature Friday, where we will be showcasing Cement Gray 4Runners. Seeya all then!
If you would like to be considered for next week’s Feature Friday, we will be showcasing some CEMENT 4RUNNERS. Just what I needed, thanks for sharing this! What’s the lift numbers on number 10?
Just got done installing an Ironman4x4 stage 3 lift with KMC Roswell KM720 wheels on 285/70/R17 K02s. I don’t think I’ve seen any other 4runners with these wheels yet. Super happy with how it turned out. The wheels reminded me one ones that used to come on old FJs.
would be good to know how many of these folks had regeared, especially with 300+ tires.
