11 Unique 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium Builds & Their Owner’s Top 5 Mods – Build Inspiration For 2023

This Week’s Topic: TRD Off-Road Premium Builds

Welcome back to another Feature Friday! Last week, we took a look at the Carbon Fiber Hood Setups for the 4Runner. This week, we are back to give you some inspiration for your 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium build.

Toyota began offering the TRD Off-Road packages on the 5th Gen 4Runner in 2017. This trim was meant to replace the outgoing Trail Edition trim.

There are a few differences between the TRD Off-Road and the TRD Off-Road Premium. The latter offers SofTex-trimmed seats, heated side mirrors, mirror turn signals, and an upgraded audio system. The Premium package is considered Toyota’s “luxury” upgrade to the TRD Off-Road trim.

You get the best of both worlds with the TRD Off-Road Premium trim; all of the off-road features that Toyota offers from the factory, as well as creature comforts that make your daily drive even better. I would almost argue that this is the 4Runner’s best trim because of its features and value.

If you’re in the market for a new 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium and don’t know where to begin with your build, look no further! We have 11 TRD ORP builds below to give you some inspiration!

I wanted to build my 4Runner to be capable off-road but still usable as a daily driver. I love taking it out on weekends, driving trails, or camping with my fiancé and dogs. However, I also commute with it.

Having both the Kings and KDSS makes the car comfortable at highway speeds and gives good articulation and height off road. The Falkens are amazing all-terrain tires and are pretty quiet on the pavement. The roof rack is super convenient and looks great. Finally, the Morimoto lighting and SCS wheels give the truck an aggressive look!

I like the aggressive look that the wide body and long travel give. I wanted a setup that would handle the trails but also have power. The carbon fiber hood and fiberglass fenders not only look great but also reduce weight. Overall, I love the clean but “built” look that I have achieved.

What I like most about this setup is that it’s set up to be my daily and weekender. SO, EVERYDAY USE!

I upgraded the suspension from another aftermarket brand, and the ride is much smoother in on and off-road conditions. The awing and RTT allow my family to enjoy our favorite trail for an extended amount of time.

Who doesn’t need more lumens from Baja Designs?! More lumens = more horsepower. Big thanks to MJ Motorsports for building this from the ground up!

  2. C4 Fabrication LoPro Bumper w/ Bullbar & High Clearance Additions
  3. Cali Raised LED Rock Sliders
  4. YotaWerx Tune
  5. Total Chaos Cam Tab Gussets & Spindle Gussets (installed by TORX Fabrication)

Tell Us About Your Setup

My suspension setup is great on and off road. It gave a bit more ground clearance and allowed me to have a negative offset wheel with 295/70/17 tires.

My bumper setup beefs up the front end to minimize trail damage and allows me to have a winch. It’s also aesthetically pleasing!

The sliders have saved me a couple of times from trail damage and provided a place to stand to access the roof rack. As an added bonus, they save me from door dents in the parking lot.

The YotaWerx tune has been a game-changer. We all know 4Runners are not known for speed. Add tires and some extra weight, and it’s even worse. The tune gave a good boost and allows the transmission to shift smoothly and at the proper RPMs.

The spindle gussets and cam tab gussets are a must if you do any technical trails. Having this work done gives me peace of mind that I’ll have one less thing get damaged on the trail.

Off-road dexterity is one of the 4Runner’s greatest attributes. With the TRD off-road premium trim, this gets turned up an extra notch.

The TRD badging seems to attract mud as well as adventures. My blackout emblems are usually a nice shade of brown, and my paint job is a canvas of the dirt I played in.

The overhead controls give you the ability to manually dial in traction and suspension performance to trek across rock, stream, mud, and loose dirt at a steep incline/decline with ease.

I imagine this 4Runner will outlive me despite the abuse I’ve put it through. I just hope the back hatch window keeps rolling down while I continue asking, “I wonder where that road goes.”

Black TRD Off Road Premium 4Runner With CVT Double Channel Mt Hood RTT & FrontRunner Slimline Roof Rack & Ladder

Top 5 Mods

  1. CVT Double Channel Mt Hood RTT
  2. Bilstein 6112/5160 Suspension w/ HD OME Rear Coils
  3. Goose Gear Drawer System w/ Base Plate
  4. Frontrunner Slimline Roof Rack & Ladder
  5. Rago Fabrications Rear Window MOLLE Panels

Tell Us About Your Setup

After a lot of trial and error, I really enjoy this current setup. The Bilstein 6112s, along with the heavy-duty coils, provide a very firm and stable foundation for the current weight.

We love our RTT from CVT too. The double channel allows you to mount things directly to it and stores our bedding so we don’t waste space in the cargo area. As a family of four, I’m able to sleep in the 4Runner thanks to the fold-down seats, and the wife and two boys sleep in the RTT.

The Goose Gear drawers have the rig ready to camp at a moment’s notice, and they’re short enough to fit our Dometic 75 with some room to spare.

Thanks to the Rago side panels, we can keep important items like flashlights, a medical kit, and bear repellent handy and accessible.

  3. Overlander Woodworks Drawer & Sleep System
  4. Nitro Gears 4.88
  5. CVC Tuning

The vehicle is mainly used for daily driving and occasionally taken for long weekend trips throughout all seasons.

I wanted to keep my 4Runner as modest and versatile as possible. When building my vehicle, I tried to maintain the OEM appearance. What I like most about it is the craftsmanship of the mods as they bring the aesthetic together.

9. Brian Ramnaraine (@bullet.t4r) – 2020 TRD ORP

Red TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner with AlphaRex Luxx Headlights & UpTop Overland Bravo Roof Rack

Top 5 Mods

  1. AlphaRex Luxx Headlights
  2. SSO Hybrid Bumper w/ Badlands Apex 12K Winch
  3. RiG’d Supply Ultraswing w/ Smittybilt I-Rack II
  4. UpTop Overland Bravo Roof Rack
  5. JL Audio C1 Door Speakers & (2) 12” Subwoofers

Tell Us About Your Setup

The main reason I chose this setup was to really maximize the capabilities of the 4Runner as an off-road and overland rig.

I have used my winch numerous times to pull my friend’s rigs out of sticky situations.

I also love listening to music, and the stock speakers were not cutting it. The upgraded system with an amp made a huge difference in my listening experience.

I really enjoy being a camp chef, so using my Ultraswing with a fold-down table and Coleman stove makes cooking at camp a breeze.

10. Taylor Wilkinson (@trdoffroad.lunarrock) – 2022 TRD ORP

Cement TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner With Viper Cut & Prinsu Roof Rack

Top 5 Mods

  1. Viper Cut
  2. Full Body PPF (applied by @parkersdetailingco)
  3. Prinsu Roof Rack
  4. C4 Ladder (Adding Soon)
  5. C4 Low Pro Bumper (Adding Soon)

Tell Us About Your Setup

We liked the idea of a viper cut for a more aggressive look. It was wonderful work done by @ghost_garagee.

The inbound C4 LoPro bumper will help with this aggressive front-end look we are going for. We also chose to have the full car protected by PPF because of its special color and want to protect the paint in general. @parkersdetailingco did a phenomenal job working on my car.

We’ll hopefully have a decked-out camping set up in the near future, so we chose the Prinsu roof rack along with the C4 ladder for functional purposes, but we also love the look of 4Runners with these mods. We can’t wait to get the C4 products on this summer!

11. Monique Guerra (@yoda.best.4runner) – 2022 TRD ORP

Cement TRD Off-Road Premium 4Runner With C4 Fabrication Lo Pro Bumper with Full Bull Bar & High Clearance Side Pieces

Top 5 Mods

  • Toyota Center Console Safe
  • ARB Onboard Twin Air Compressor
  • C4 Fabrication LoPro Bumper w/ Full Bull Bar & High Clearance Additions
  • Fuel D785 Wheels | Matte Bronze
  • Baja Design S8 Light Bar

Tell Us About Your Setup

The console safe was an easy upgrade from the dealer. The concept of separate locked storage inside our rig to secure important items at the drop of a dime was a no-brainer for our family.

Initially, we started out with a portable air compressor which was fine until I forgot it in our garage once. Having said that, we knew it was time to upgrade to an onboard air system. It has come in handy plenty of times, even when not off-roading. Forgot your compressor? I got you. Flat tire? I got you. Forgot to pressurize your Waterport? Yup, you guessed it, I got you!

When it was time to add our bumper, we went with the C4 Fabrications LoPro due to the high clearance side pieces. I have always been a fan of the high clearance cut but did not like the idea of the bumper edge being unprotected. Having the side pieces provide a bit more protection and peace of mind. I may not come out of the trails damage free, but it will be minimal.

On account of the frequent rain in the PNW, we opted for Baja Designs for lighting. Its moisture block technology protects it from rain, snow, and puddles on and off the trails yet still lights up the night without an issue.

My first and absolute favorite part of my build has been my Fuel D785 wheels! I instantly fell in love with the unique design. It reminds me of a flower or a mandala pattern. Every time I see them, it’s a constant reminder that women belong in motorsports too, which I really appreciate. The matte bronze was the perfect shade and pop of color I was looking for. For now, this is the perfect setup for me, but there will always be more to come!

I will never understand why people think hacking half your bumper off with a Sawzall is a good look.
