11 Lunar Rock 5th Gen 4Runners & Their Owner’s Top 5 Must-Have Mods – Off-Road & Overland Build Inspiration
This Week’s Topic: Lunar Rock 4Runners
Hey guys, welcome back to another Feature Friday! If you missed last week’s FF, we looked at fiberglass front fenders for the 4Runner.
This week, we are looking at 4Runners in the super popular Lunar Rock paint color. We also asked owners what their top 5 mods were on their rigs for, you know – science.
Lunar Rock was first introduced on the 5th 4Runner for the 2021 model year as an exclusive TRD Pro color. Toyota must have heard us 4Runner enthusiasts rant and rave over how good Lunar Rock looked on the RAV4. This color quickly became one of the most sought-after colors because it freaking looks good on everything!
The following model year, Lunar Rock was available again, which TRD Pro owners weren’t used to. Typically, the TRD Pro trim was offered in an exclusive color for a given year, and that’s it. However, that’s not the case anymore.
Toyota has, in my opinion, ruined the TRD Pro prestige of the 4Runner by offering some of the once-exclusive colors on other trim levels in later years. It started with the 2020 Army Green color, and it looks like this may be the new pattern going forward.
While it is still exclusive-ish by only being available now on TRD trims like the Off-Road and Sport, it opens the floodgates for any Toyota vehicle to wear the color. I mean, shoot, just put it on the Prius while we are at it!
But hey, it looks freaking awesome, am I right? I can’t totally blame Toyota for making this crowd favorite more widely available. It also allows those who really love the color to be able to get it without spending an arm and a leg on a TRD Pro, especially in today’s market. However, I digress.
If you are looking at Lunar Rock 4Runners and are curious about how they look with some mods, then you’re in the right place!
As always, feel free to DM the owners on IG to ask any additional questions about their setup if needed.
Note these rigs are not in any particular order, they are all freaking rad in my book.
Enjoy!

What Are Your Top 5 Mods?
- Relations Race Wheels RR7-H
- King Shocks 2.5 w/ Remote Reservoir
- LabOps Gear Dash Mount V2
- Yota Twins Dog Cargo Barrier
- RSG Off-Road Sliders
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
Let’s start with my passion for the build, Lunar Rock. I am obsessed with this color and I immediately complimented it with the Relations Race Wheels RR7-H in matte bronze with a -25mm offset. Those are wrapped in a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT 285/70R17.
To carry the rig, I went with the King Shocks 2.5 with remote reservoirs and she rides like a dream. I paired the Kings with a set of Total Chaos upper control arms. The articulation that I have gained with the Kings and upgraded UCAs is unreal.
I am not just another “mall crawler” either, I like to test my machine. For protection, I went with a pair of RSG Off-Road angled sliders. Let me tell you, they have saved me from body damage numerous times.
Not all upgrades have to go to the exterior. The interior has a couple of my favorite upgrades. LabOps Gear came through clutch with a sleek yet badass accessory mount. Since I have my pups and they accompany me everywhere. Yota Twins hooked me up with a dog barrier that looks classy and freaking cool.
I have to admit, all parts of this 2022 TRD ORP 4Runner are phenomenal, so pinpointing my top 5 mods was difficult. I love my AllPro low-profile bumper with the viper cut and the Tufskinz Lunar colored TRD letters on my matte black powder-coated factory skid plate complement my build as well. The R4T lower control arm skids make those Front End Friday posts pop and the Prinsu roof rack was an absolute must for the overall appearance.
Best of all, this build will just continue to get better. I’ll have Yukon 4.88 gears installed this December and upgrade to 35s shortly after. I will also be adding a Nguyen Works high clearance rear bumper with tire swing out which, should be on my doorstep this week.
Stay tuned to this build, it will be a show-stopper!

I have loved the 4Runner since the 1st generation! I’ve always wanted a 4Runner, and finally had an opportunity to buy one! What I truly love about my ’21 TRD Pro Lunar Rock is my unique TRD stripes to give that retro vibe in the modern era! I also like the fact that there are so many aftermarket companies available for this vehicle. It’s an endless modification free-for-all!

- 4.88 Nitro Gears/Eaton Front E-Locker
- Dobinsons MRR Long Travel Suspension
- Morimoto XB LED Headlights

What Do You Like About Your Setup?
I have been building this 4Runner with the intent of making it an extremely off-road capable rig while also still keeping it useable as my daily driver.
All of the work done over the past 2 years has set me up to run 35s. I have done my mods in phases, starting with a Westcott lift on 33s. Then, I upgraded to the Dobinsons setup and 34s. When the itch for 35s was too great, I had the 4.88 Nitro Gears with the Eaton Front E-Locker put in, which has brought my truck back closer to stock drivability.
Initially, I had done a BMC for my 33″-34″ tire setup but later went with the full DRT Fab relocation kit. I probably don’t need the 35″ Yokohama MTs on a daily, but I always had my goals set on building this rig up for 35s. This is the furthest I have ever modified any vehicle I’ve owned, but I love the truck more every day and plan to keep it until the wheels fall off.

What Are Your Top 5 Mods?
- Morimoto XB LED Headlights w/ Amber DRL
- Hardrock Off-Road Wheels H105 Matte Bronze | 17X9 | -12mm Offset w/ 33″ Nitto Terra Grapplers
- Shift Power Throttle Response Controller
- Cali Raised LED 20-Degree Trail Edition Rock Sliders
- Diode Dynamics SS3 LED Ditch Light Kit | Yellow Combo
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
The FURRUNNER is still pretty young and has a long way to go with adventures and the build. However, getting the essential mods, for now, was a must!
The Morimoto XB LED Amber DRL headlights and Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro ditch lights give her the beastly and badass look she deserves while providing the best brightness output on the market for day and night.
Being born and raised in Cali, I had to get the best in the West for vehicle protection for any kind of off-roading (yes, even for mall crawling) and went with Cali Raised LED.
Shoes are everything for me, so going with Hardrock Off-Road Wheels in matte bronze makes The FURRUNNER pop anywhere!
With today’s gas prices and inflation, I had to find a way to save money while also having some fun. Shift Power’s throttle response controller was the best way to keep my 4Runner safe from thieves or irresponsible valet drivers, save gas on eco mode, and add multiple throttle response modes. The controller has a super sport mode which is my favorite! She is no longer slow and steady, and is now fast and furrious!

What Are Your Top 5 Mods?
- Sherpa Equipment Co. Window Panels (Driver & Passenger) w/ 4 RotoPax Mounts
- Roam 95L Storage Box
- Custom-Designed Full-Length Kitchen/Storage Unit w/ A Platform For My Dog, Bane
- Westcott Designs Roof Rack/Ladder
- BFG KM3s | 285/70R17
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
Designing and building my custom storage/kitchen in the back has been a game-changer. I’ve been overlanding full-time with my dog for the past year. For the first 5 months, I just had a flat piece of plywood in the back and all my gear was in stacked totes. The biggest tote had my kitchen stuff and was always buried under everything else.
Now, I have a 5ft full extension drawer that’s 15″ deep so I can fit small totes on one side of the 4Runner and a 3ft full extension fridge drawer on the other side. The 5ft drawer has a pull-out collapsible sink with a Dometic water faucet piped to a 7-gallon jug, a good-sized “junk drawer”, and a 2-burner Coleman stove all built into the front of the drawer.
The rest is an open storage area that holds my diesel heater, camp gear tote, and kitchen stuff/food. It has a full-length split top that hinges open on the front half from the passenger rear door for access. I can sleep on it and store stuff like my Shiftpod III on top. The fridge side has a 24″ flat surface that slides from underneath and above the fridge a platform where my Jackery 1500 lives.
The driver’s rear door is where my dog’s platform is. This is the lowest part of the vehicle for easy entry and exit (he just turned 10yrs old) and so he has a good low center of gravity when we’re on trails. There are some videos on my Instagram of the whole unit if you all want to check them out!
Aside from the storage/kitchen system, my latest and other favorite mod was the addition of the Sherpa Window Panels with RotoPax mounts. Being able to carry additional fluid (diesel, gas, water) with quick and easy access has been clutch. In the winter, I find myself using the fuel packs to carry only diesel (6 gallons total) for my diesel heater. In the summer, I’ll switch them over to carrying 6 gallons of regular fuel.
For those wondering, the window panels are mounted pretty seamlessly to the Westcott Designs Roof Rack rails. The guys at Sherpa were kind enough to have me over to test fit before purchasing.

- Black Rhino York | 17X9 | -12mm Offset
- Baja Designs LED Fog Lights
- Morimoto XB LED Tail Lights
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
For me, it’s got to be the aggressive body style; Toyota knocked it out of the park. A lot of people say that the designs are old and while I agree, it still looks new to me. Every time I drive my 4Runner, I get a smile. I’ll admit that I look back at my 4Runner more than I should when walking away! I can’t forget about its reliability either; to have that piece of mind every time you get inside your 4Runner is worth every penny!

I like the flexibility of driving around the city and the trails. The full skid plates under my 4Runner give me the comfort of knowing I can drive it around dirt and trails without worry of damage. I went with Summit Dakar Wheels for some city flavor. Even with these simple mods, my 4Runner still makes heads turn when I drive by. This is especially true with the help of the trusty raptor lights!

What’s not to love about the Toyota 4Runner? They are very capable, reliable, and look amazing. For me, this is a perfect all-around rig. I can take it anywhere and I don’t feel out of place. The best part is you can take out your family for an adventure and meet people along the way.
We are so fortunate to have YouTube for ideas, mods, and DIY projects. That not only saves money but in the process, you also learn how to fix your truck – especially if you have trouble on the trail.

What Are Your Top 5 Mods?
- CVC Tune
- Westcott Designs Sliders | 0-Degree
- Stealth Custom Series Blaze10 | 17X9 | -38mm w/ Maxxis Razr MT 35X12.5R17
- King Shocks 2.5 Extended Travel w/ Adjusters
- Prinsu Designs Full-Length Roof Rack
What Do You Like About Your Setup?
When I first got the truck, I always had the vision to keep things simple and functional. The 3” lift and bigger tires really help clear a good amount of obstacles and the ride is still comfortable enough for a long road trip thanks to the King Shocks. I’ve not yet regeared, but I can strongly recommend the CVC tune. It really helps with drivability and wakes up the sluggish V6. Not to mention, a nice bump in MPG.
The Westcott sliders are of the best quality in my opinion. No other slider really comes close in terms of precision and design. Overall, I’m very happy with the way things have turned out so far. This build is just simple, functional, and meaty!
Special shout out to Klean Ridez and Vex Motorsport for always taking care of the rig and helping it get to where it’s at.
Final Thoughts
Well, as always, I hope you all enjoyed this week’s Feature Friday post. The Lunar Rock color is honestly one of my favorite colors that Toyota has ever offered. Personally, I like it most on the Toyota Tundra, but the 4Runner wears it really well too!
