Why I Chose This Combo Shackle/Fairlead For My Winch Setup

There’s something about knocking out a clean, functional upgrade during your kids’ nap time that just hits different.

Between daily driving and testing my SR5 4Runner and off-roading my 2016 Trail 5th Gen 4Runner, I’ve been focusing on dialing in the small details that actually matter when you’re out on the trail—or just want peace of mind knowing your setup is ready. One of those upgrades is installing the C4 Fabrication closed shackle fairlead.

This is one of those mods that blends function, safety, and a clean front-end look, and the best part is, it only took about 10 minutes to install in the garage. The C4 Winch fairlead is CNC-machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum. Offered options include an Open Shackle version rated to 20,000lbs and a Closed Shackle version (the one featured in this article) rated to 30,000lbs. There’s an option for everyone, based on their preferences and needs.

Vehicle & Setup

Why I Went This Route

Combination Winch Fairlead & Shackle For 4Runner

One of the biggest things I appreciate about this setup is how intentional the design feels. The closed shackle paired with the fairlead keeps everything tucked in tight, eliminating unnecessary movement and reducing the chance of anything shifting under the lead. It’s a small detail, but when you’re dealing with recovery situations, those details matter. You want gear that’s predictable, secure, and built to handle real-world use… not just looks good on your rig.

Another standout for me was the installation process. This wasn’t one of those projects that eats up your entire afternoon or requires a full garage setup. From start to finish, it took me about 10 minutes with basic tools. That alone makes it a solid upgrade for anyone who enjoys doing their own installs but doesn’t always have the hours to share.

I chose the Closed Shackle because…

  • It is a more secure recovery point
  • Cleaner integration into the bumper
  • Reduced movement compared to open-style setups

For my build, it just made sense to keep everything tight, functional, and visually dialed. I would almost always choose this setup again.

Tools For Installing Winch Fairlead On 4Runner

This install is very straightforward, especially with the C4 Hybrid bumper, and should only take about 10 minutes. With this bumper, accessing the bolts and screws to secure it is that much easier. Simple tools. Quick job. No overcomplication.

    Tools Required:

    • 3/8” drive socket
    • 5/16” hex bit
    • 3/4” wrench
    • Snap ring pliers

Step 1. Remove Existing Fairlead (if applicable)

Loosen and remove the existing fairlead hardware from the bumper if you’ve got one on there already.

    Step 2. Position New Fairlead

    Test Fitting C4 Fairlead

Line up the new fairlead with the mounting points on the bumper. Pro tip, don’t skip this.

The closed shackle only installs one way, so before tightening everything down…

    • Test fit the shackle first
    • Decide which direction you want it facing
    • Then align the fairlead accordingly

The shackle only attaches one way. This will save you from having to redo the install later.

Step 3. Work Behind Bumper To Secure Hardware

This is the only slightly tricky part. The bumper allows access, but it is still a tight space when aligning hardware. Just be patient. Use your socket, hex bit, and wrench to tighten everything evenly and securely.

Step 4. Install Winch Line In Shackle

Removing Snap Ring From Winch Shackle To Install Synthetic Line

Use the appropriate pliers to remove the snap ring holding the pin. Once removed, insert your winch line and insert the pin through the shackle. Place the snap ring back in, and you’re ready to boogie.

    Initial Impressions

    C4 Closed Shackle Winch Fairlead

What surprised me most was the weight. I expected it to feel heavier, but it was solid without being overly bulky, which made installation easier, especially doing it during your kids’ nap time. But the real standout feature? The way the shackle sits inside the fairlead, like it’s got its own slot, nicely snug.

It almost feels like it’s resting on its own built-in shelf. Tucked in, secure, and not just hanging off the front, putting possible tension on the winch line. That detail makes a huge difference. It keeps everything looking clean and intentional while also giving you confidence that your recovery point is exactly where it should be when you need it. It’s one of those things you don’t fully appreciate until you see it installed and run your hands over it.

    Real-World Confidence

    C4 Closed Winch Shackle

Running a fully built 5th Gen alongside a stock SR5 has really put things into perspective for me. Having proper recovery points isn’t just about off-roading, it’s about being prepared. Whether I’m testing, exploring, or just loading up the kids and heading out, knowing my setup is dialed gives me confidence every time I drive.

    Final Thoughts

If you’re already running a winch setup or planning to do so, the C4 Fabrication closed-shackle fairlead is absolutely worth it. For a quick 10-minute install, you’re getting a cleaner front-end look, a more secure recovery point, and a design detail that actually improves how your setup functions, not just how it looks. It’s a small upgrade that makes your entire front-end feel more complete and confidence-ready.

From a functional standpoint, having a properly mounted recovery point that integrates cleanly with your fairlead setup just makes sense. It streamlines your recovery gear and removes the guesswork when you need to act quickly. Whether you’re out on a trail with friends or handling a solo situation, having reliable, easy-to-access recovery points adds confidence.

Overall, this setup strikes a really strong balance between form and function. It looks clean, installs fast, and most importantly, it’s built to perform when it actually counts.
