Why You Should Consider Upgrading

Heavy Duty Side Steps On 4Runner

  1. Practical Accessibility: As mentioned, a lifted 4Runner can be intimidating to climb into, especially in wet or slippery conditions. The extra step improves daily usability.
  2. Protection From Minor Impacts: The robust frame mount and cold-rolled steel construction offer dependable shielding against rock chips, logs, and other debris that could otherwise dent the rocker panels. Maybe even a minor accident.
  3. Long-Term Durability: The Ironman 4×4 utilizes pickled, cold-rolled steel with 360° robotic welds, ensuring consistent structural integrity. Coupled with a uniform powder coat, these steps are engineered to withstand years of off-road abuse and inclement weather.
  4. Cost Savings on Repairs: Damage to side panels and rocker areas can lead to high repair bills. The up-front investment can save you money in the long run by preventing costly bodywork.

Installation Overview

Mounting these to your 4Runner is a straightforward process. Check out the Ironman 4×4 install video. We have an article dedicated entirely to installation (coming soon), but here’s a quick overview.

Ironman provides all necessary hardware and frame-mounted brackets. The installation typically takes just a few hours and involves removing existing steps or rails, aligning brackets with the frame holes, and securing the steps using the provided hardware.

First Impressions

Ironman Heavy Duty Side Step Review

Right away, I noticed a significant improvement in how easily people, including my small kids, could enter and exit my 4Runner. These steps provide just the right amount of boost, making entry and exit far more comfortable. The stepping surface is wide enough for confident foot placement, although I did find the textured powder coat somewhat slicker than rubber-like coated options when conditions were wet.

In terms of protection, these side steps truly stand out amongst a large field of competitors. Constructed from cold-rolled steel with solid mounting hardware, they offer substantial reinforcement, creating a robust barrier between your rocker panels and obstacles on the trail.

During initial tests on moderate trails, the steps successfully absorbed impacts from rocks and tree stumps, effectively shielding the vehicle from potential damage. Surprisingly, the powder coating resisted scratches well, but I need more time to comment on its long-term durability.

Rock Sliders Vs. Heavy Duty Side Steps

When it comes to side protection, you’ll generally hear about two types: rock sliders and heavy-duty side steps. While both offer protection, there are some notable differences…

 Rock Sliders

  • Built specifically for challenging trails and rock crawling.
  • Made from heavier steel.
  • Directly frame-mounted for maximum protection.
  • Primarily for hardcore impact protection.

 Heavy Duty Side Steps:

  • Provide convenience and moderate trail protection.
  • Made from slightly lighter yet still robust steel or aluminum.
  • Usually frame-mounted for durability (some are bolted to factory body location, which is not made for impacts).
  • Great as stepping platforms for entry or when mounting gear on the roof.

Which Are Right for You?

When deciding between sliders and heavy-duty side steps, take into account the following factors to make an informed choice…

  • Off-Roading Preferences: Consider how often you engage in off-roading and the types of terrains you encounter. Frequent and intense off-roading may warrant the use of sliders for protection.
  • Vehicle Use: Determine whether you primarily use your vehicle for off-roading or if it serves as your daily driver, as this will greatly influence your decision. If you spend more time dropping your kids off at practice than you do dropping your truck off rock ledges on the trail, heavy-duty side steps are likely the way to go.
  • Aesthetic Preference: Decide if the appearance of your vehicle is a priority; side steps tend to be more streamlined and polished. Sliders are typically minimalist, prioritizing form over function.

I have their first generation side steps. They’re not a jack point but I’ve used them to pivot and had to rattle can them several times. I’m sure these are even better.
