Affordable Smoked Taillights, Sequential Turn Signal & Startup Sequence

When researching new taillights for our OG 4Runner, we came across several options. However, many are expensive. But there is a solid range of price points. Budget friendly stuff is always a big market. The Aspire G1 Stealth lights are a significant visual upgrade (especially for older 5th Gens) and won’t break the bank. The aesthetics were exactly what we were looking for… a smoked housing that wasn’t dark enough to render the lighting ineffective.

Once installed, they modernized the 4Runner’s entire look. Not only do these look amazing, but the price is exceptional for the quality. I really like the sequential turns too.

Product Overview

G1 Stealth LED Taillights Vs. OEM Lights

The taillights shipped and arrived very quickly from Aspire Auto Accessories. They were packaged very well, with plenty of protective foam to avoid any damage during transit. The units themselves feel solidly constructed and don’t feel cheap – which is great at this price.

Compared to the basic incandescent bulbs in the factory tails, these full LED units are exponentially brighter. From a safety standpoint, it will be hard not to see these in traffic. The running, reverse, brake lights, and sequential turn signals are clearly visible. The G1 Stealths meet all necessary safety regulations and are DOT and SAE-approved.

They have a super rad start up sequence, linked a video to that at the end of this post.

Fits 2010-2024 4Runner, and comes with a 3-year warranty!!

Installation Overview

Tools Required

  • Trim tool or small flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm deep well 1/4″ drive socket
  • 6″ – 1/4″ drive extension
  • 1/4″ drive socket wrench
  • Soft rags

Installation only requires basic hand tools and should take no longer than 30 minutes for both sides. However, you’ll want to take extra care when removing them to avoid damaging the paint on the rear bumper.

Step 1. Remove Taillight Cover

4Runner Cargo Taillight Cover

To remove the OEM lights, you first need to remove the rectangular access panels for the taillights. Use a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver to pop the cover off. There are small indentions on both sides of the panel indicating where to insert your pry tool.

Step 2. Remove Light Bolts

Next, there are (2) 10mm nuts above and below the wiring harness. You’ll need a deep 10mm socket and a 6″ extension to remove them. Be careful not to drop them, as this will make for a much longer installation. Then, disconnect the wiring harness.

Once these have been removed, the light is held in by clips. From the exterior, firmly grab it and pull towards the rear of the truck. You’ll hear a series of popping sounds, which are the plastic clips disengaging.

Step 3. Install New Lights

On the new lights, there are (2) identical bolts to the factory ones. Line these up with their corresponding holes on the vehicle and feed the wires through the larger opening. With everything in position, push the taillight into the vehicle until you hear the clips reengage, making sure none of the wires are being pinched.

Next, reinstall the (2) 10mm nuts to secure everything..

Step 4. Mount Resistor

LED Taillight Resistor

Remove the double-sided tape from the resistor and pick a mounting location away from any plastic or wires, as this will get hot when the lights are in use.

Finally, reinstall the plastic cover and repeat Steps 1-4 on the other side.

Final Thoughts

Smoked Tail Lights 4Runner Review

These are a great plug-and-play option with no modification needed for installation. The fitment is also nice and snug, with no huge gaps or movement.

The stealthy appearance looks sleek and has a style that works well with the rugged design of the 4Runner. It looks amazing, and it will definitely turn heads anywhere you go! I’m super happy with them.
