Tie-downs and ratchet straps are an essential part of securing your gear. Whether you are out for an off-road adventure or taking your family to the beach, a good set of ratchet straps will come in handy. You can use ratchet straps for a wide variety of applications on the 4Runner.
Ratchet straps are used for securing storage boxes, spare tires, water containers, jerry cans, suitcases, camping gear, and a wide variety of recovery gear. You can also use these for securing storage in the rear cargo area to prevent your gear from bouncing around and shifting while on the road or trail. Straps can also be used as a tool if you for some reason blow a suspension.
Ratchet straps are also commonly used to secure bikes, motorcycles, camping gear, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and much more.
Tie-downs are a must-have accessory that I carry in the 4Runner at all times. You never know when you will need a strap and they always seem to come in pretty useful.
Factors when buying ratchet straps
Hook Type: Straps come in many shapes and sizes. The main difference between most options is the type of hook they feature. You will find “J” hooks, “S” hooks,”T” hooks, snap hooks, and carabineer style hooks. They may be a few others but these are the most common.
Size: Sizes commonly range from 5′-30′ with 15′ being the most common. A 15′ foot strap will usually get the job done for most applications with some slack left over.
Breaking strength: Breaking strength is a key point to look at, just like when reviewing recovery straps. Common breaking strength ratings are around 1500lbs but you can find higher rated options at 2000lbs-5000lbs. It really depends on your application but the higher rated breaking strength options are usually only a few bucks more so it’s worth the extra spend to have a stronger strap.
Storage & Organization: Storage is also important when choosing a set of tie-downs. Some tie-downs, like the Pro Tapers and the Rocket Straps, come with a velcro cinch. The Pro Tapers have them sewed into the strap, and the Rockets come with separate cinch. For most options, you may want to buy a cinch separate if you want to keep your straps nice, neat and organized. Cinch straps also prevent your loose slack from flapping in the wind while driving down the road.

There are hundreds of options to consider for tie-downs but I would stay away from cheap straps with low breaking strength and load capacity ratings. I have used Pro Tapers for many years and love them. After using the Rhino USA straps for a while now, I have grown to really like these as well. Rhino USA features “S” hooks and the Pro Tapers feature carabineer style hooks.
It is nice to have both Rhino and Pro Taper as they both work for different applications but do your research and find which ones will work best for you.

The 5208lb breaking strength heavy-duty Rhino straps are used for larger applications. The working load on this strap is 1736lbs which is pretty impressive for a ratchet strap. Compare that working load to 1000lbs on average for other straps in its class. The downside for some is that the strap is only 8′ long; however, this has been more than enough for everything we have strapped down.
If you are are looking to strap down large kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, or oversized storage boxes on your roof, these are the straps for you.
These will also be a good option for motorcycles, UTVs, ATVs and other miscellaneous toys that you might be hauling on a trailer. This heavy-duty tie-down is more than enough for most applications you will throw at it.

Rhino USA Ratchet Straps (1,823lb Break Strength)
Rhino USA has one of the highest rated breaking strengths (1823lbs) among the average ratchet straps out there. While most ratchet tie-downs are rated at 1500lbs, Rhino USA has the edge. These straps are 15′ long which provides more than enough length to tackle most applications. The working load is 608lbs which is higher than the average 500lbs rated for most other straps at comparable price points.

Pro Tapers
Pro Tapers have been a part of my life since my first Honda 80 dirt bike.
These tie-downs have a carabineer hook with an industrial strength non-slip cam buckle and a cinch strap sewed onto the strap for clean storage.
The cam buckle is very easy to use and is very strong. Pro Tapers are 7′ long, have a breaking strength of 1200lbs and a working load of 300lbs. Depending on your applications, these are a good option to consider when looking at tie-downs.
Velcro Cinch Straps for Storage
If your straps do not come with a cinch, you may want to consider picking up a pack. They are fairly inexpensive and can be used for many applications, not just tie-downs. I use the cinch straps to prevent extra slack from flapping in the wind while driving.
You can also use them when you are storing your straps. After you are finished with your straps, ball up the loose slack and strap a cinch around them.
If you don’t want to spend the extra money on the cinch straps, just tie the loose slack around the bulk of the strap to hold everything in place while driving or for storage.
I just think the cinch straps are just cleaner, though.
Not sure if you realize this, but you’re essentially promoting scam artists. Rhino USA products are NOT actually made in the USA like you stated. They are made in China like all the other tie downs. They essentially built their business by scamming their customers into thinking they are buying American made products. They only recently changed their tune after they got sued by a competitor (look up Vault Cargo Management vs Rhino USA), and even now they are still doing their darndest to imply that their products are made in the USA until after the sale has been made.
Strongly recommend you rewrite your review to point this out, unless of course Rhino USA paid you for this review which would make this irrelevant anyways.
Promote a reputable company that doesn’t directly lie to their customers for the sake of making a buck instead.

Thanks man, this post has been updated and noted that their products are made overseas. I have no affiliation with Rhino USA at all. Super unfortunate that they used a big bold USA in their name to claim American made. Their products are still pretty nice (some of them, their folding shovel sucks). I would still recommend their ratchet straps and tow strap.
