OEM Audio+ Tweeter System Step-By-Step Install + Review For the 5th Gen 4Runner
Audio system upgrades can be intimidating.
What speakers, how to wire them, how to equalize sound, and so many other questions will probably cross your mind. There have been a few different articles on Trail4R covering the OEM Audio+ upgrades available for 5th Gen 4Runners, but I wanted to take a slightly different approach…a systematic three-step upgrade.
This article will be the first of three covering a systematic upgrade of a 5th Gen 4Runners audio system with OEM Audio+ components. In this article, I will be covering how to install OEM Audio+ Tweeters and what type of sound quality you can expect from upgrading the tweeters and nothing else.
In the second article, I will cover how to install the OEM Audio+ subwoofer and amplifier, and of course how this sounds. Last, I will upgrade all six of the door speakers in my 5th Gen 4Runner. Let’s get started.

Installation Process
As I previously mentioned, great installation articles have already been featured on Trail4R in regard to the OEM Audio+ components, so I will quickly fly through how you should install these tweeters and then focus in on the sound quality.
In addition, please see my installation/review video at the end of this article.
Step 1. Remove Grate Covering Factory Tweeter
To begin, use a pry tool to remove the grate that covers the factory tweeter. You can do this by inserting your pry tool just in front of the grate and prying up.
Step 2. Remove (x2) 10mm Bolts For Factory Tweeters
Using a socket wrench, remove the two 10mm bolts holding the factory tweeters in place.
Step 3. Unplug Factory Wiring Harness
Unplug the factory wiring harness from the factory tweeter.
Step 4. Plug in OEM Audio+ Tweeter To Factory Wiring Harness
Plug in your OEM Audio+ tweeter to the factory wiring harness and then secure the OEM Audio+ Tweeter in place with the two factory 10mm bolts.
You don’t need to tighten these bolts too much, just snug them up.
Step 5. Replace Factory Grate Covering Tweeters
Replace the factory grate that covers the tweeters. Repeat the same process on the other side of your vehicle. Now, enjoy the upgraded sound from these tweeters alone!
As you can see, replacing the factory tweeters with OEM Audio+ tweeters is quite easy. The question that really matters is if the install is worth it? Let’s find out.
Review of the OEM Audio+ Tweeters
Let’s face the facts…everyone perceives things differently. Some people like firm suspension, some like soft. Some like big all-terrain tires, while others like to stick to tires that provide better fuel economy. The key point I want to make is some things (if not most) are personal preference…even when it comes to sound. As such, this review is simply my personal opinion that I want to share with you.
After the installation was complete and I turned on some of my favorite songs, I immediately noticed something…the increased clarity! Yes, these tweeters gave me substantially more clarity. While I didn’t think the factory sound system in my 4Runner was bad, simply upgrading the tweeters showed me that I was missing out on some tone and clarity.
I can now hear sounds that I didn’t quite hear before, or didn’t hear very well. What type of sounds? Higher vocals, symbols, snare drums, guitar, and simply the mid to higher notes in music. In addition, the sounds are all very distinct.
In comparison to the factory sound system, these tweeters from OEM Audio+ really provided so much more definition and distinction. It truly is remarkable.
Now, if you are not someone that has an ear for music, the difference might not be as easily grasped; however, I play guitar a lot, record my own music, and really appreciate when sounds come together so it was quite easy for me to recognize the difference between the factory tweeters and OEM Audio+ Tweeters. Quite frankly, I truly think nearly anyone will notice the difference though…these tweeters from OEM Audio+ are just that good.
Considering how easy these tweeters are to replace in conjunction with the improvements the OEM Audio+ Tweeters add, I’d highly recommend upgrading your 4Runner’s factory tweeters with some OEM Audio+ Tweeters.

Great article, can you provide the link to the individual tweeters? Their site only shows that you can purchase in a bundle with all the other speakers for the 4runner. Thanks!

The link you provided does not look like the same speakers. Does the speakers come with the mounting bracket?
They have the absolute worst website I’ve ever dealt with. Is there a direct link to just the tweeters by chance?
Thanks!
