If you’re a 4Runner owner, you already know the world of lighting upgrades is massive. Options range from budget-friendly bulb swaps to full aftermarket housings that can run north of $1,500.
I upgraded my OEM housings with Boslla Bullet low-beam bulbs and Xenon Pro HID high beams, which were pretty solid, and have been running them for almost 4 years now. It was a big upgrade from the OEM halogen bulbs, and I honestly thought full housings wouldn’t be much better. I was wrong. The new Form Lighting headlights are on a whole other level. Priced at $1200 (at time of publishing), the results have been phenomenal: sharper cutoff, brighter output, and a modern blacked-out look that fits perfectly.
This write-up will cover the installation, beam comparisons, and my full review.

Why I Chose Form Lighting
Even though Form Lighting may be newer, their build quality and design have quickly gained traction among 4Runner owners looking for an OEM-level fit combined with a major jump in lighting performance. They’re actually a subsidiary of Diode Dynamics, a household name in aftermarket lighting.
Their highlights include…
- Triple Projector Design (Two low-beam + one high-beam)
- Selectable DRL Color (Amber or White)
- Sequential Turn Signals
- Blacked-Out Housing
- Plug-and-Play Installation (Includes DRL add-a-fuse harness)
- DOT Compliant
- 2-Year Warranty
Installation
The first step is to remove your bumper. I am going to skip this, but for full step-by-step instructions (including bumper removal), see Form Lighting’s full written instructions or video. Your install may vary slightly if you have an aftermarket bumper, viper cut, or other front-end mods.
Tools Needed:Â
- 10mm socket and ratchet
- Trim removal tool
- Phillips head screwdriver
Step 1. Remove OEM Headlights

(4) 10mm bolts hold the OEM headlights. You will need to remove or slightly remove your bumper, radiator cover, and plastic hood shield in order to gain access to all. I opted to remove my aftermarket bumper slightly, but it is definitely easier to remove the entire bumper.
Step 2. Transfer Plastic Fastener

A plastic headlight fastener needs to be transferred from your OEM headlights to the new Form headlights. (3) screws hold it on.
Step 3. Choose DRL Color

Now is the time to decide your DRL color: amber or white. You need to access the wiring harness by removing the grommet on the bottom of the headlight with a trim removal tool. Locate the black and white plug.
- For white, it needs to be connected; mine came connected already.
- For amber, it needs to be unplugged.
I decided to go with white, so I made sure they were both plugged in. Next, put the wiring and grommet back in place, and make sure the grommet is sealed properly.
Step 4. Installing Adapter Harness (2021+ Only)

Fitment Notes:
- If your vehicle is a 2021-2024 model, you will need to use Form’s included adapter harness.
- Following this step incorrectly may result in your high beams not functioning correctly.
- If your vehicle is a 2021 TRD Offroad or SR5, plug the highlighted low beam connectors into the headlights and leave the 9006 connectors on the adapter harnesses disconnected.
- If you are installing on a 2021 Limited, TRD Pro, Nightshade, or any 2022+ models, plug both the low beam and the 9006 bulb connectors into each headlight.
I have a 2018 SR5 Premium, so I did not need the additional harness.
Step 5. Install DRL Fuse Tap

Next, I ran the DRL Fuse Tap into my fuse box to the injector fuse INJ10A. Remove the 10A fuse already installed, then plug in the provided fuse tap. I then ran it to the driver’s side and then to the passenger side. It’s a bit long to give you room to adjust it, but I had extra, so I wrapped it up a bit and used a zip tie to keep it tidy.
If you have a 2020+ model, you will add the fuse tap to the EFI main #1 fuse location.
Step 6. Plug In Form Headlights

Now you are ready to install the headlights. Match all of the plugs from the 4Runner to the headlights. They are all shaped differently and should snap in easily. I had 4 OEM plugs plus the new DRL plug.
Step 7. Install Form Headlights

Reinstall the (4) 10mm bolts to hold the headlights in place. I left the plastic wrapping on until the very end to avoid damaging the headlights.
Step 8. Test The Lights

Before you put everything back together, I suggest testing the lights to ensure they are working correctly—DRLs, Low beams, High beams, Turn signals. If you have any issues, it will be much easier to troubleshoot and fix now.
Step 9. Reinstall Bumper

Once you confirm everything is working, you can go in reverse and reinstall everything except the radiator cover.
Adjusting The Beams

To adjust the beam height, you only need the radiator cover removed and a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screwdriver is inserted vertically into that slot with the teeth.
Form Lighting has a blog that gives full details on how to adjust headlights with measurements and tape.
Clockwise moves the beam down, and counterclockwise moves the beam up.
I found it easiest to adjust the lights when it was dark and point them at a garage door or something so you could easily see the difference in beam intensity between the two sides. My driver-side beam was slightly higher than my passenger-side beam, so I adjusted it down to match the passenger-side beam. Once you adjust the lights to your liking, you can reinstall the radiator cover.

Final Thoughts

The Form Lighting LED projector housings completely transformed the front end of my 5th Gen 4Runner. From triple-projector performance to sequential turn signals and a blackout finish, this upgrade checks every box for style, performance, and ease of install. The plug-and-play harness makes installation beginner-friendly, and with proper aiming, you get bright, controlled light without blinding other drivers.
I am completely satisfied with my decision to upgrade to Form Lighting headlights. It is the finishing touch that ties my build together. The blacked-out housing, sequential turn signals, and DRLs add an edge that complements the look I am striving for.

Do your DRL’s stay on no matter what when the engine is on? I just installed as well, and even if the “DRL” switch is OFF, they stay on long as the engine is running. 2017 SR5.
