Dissent Off-Road 6th Gen 4Runner High Clearance Front Bumper Review

6th Gen 4Runner Front Bumper on Rubicon

First “Mustache Delete” Front Bumper For 6th Gen 4Runner

When the 6th Gen 4Runner was announced, the one thing just about everyone complained about was the double mustache. Well, here it is, the first mustache delete bumper.

Introducing the all-new Dissent Off-Road High Clearance Mustache Delete Front Bumper for the 6th Generation Toyota 4Runner. An absolutely stunning work of art, yet again from Dissent Off-Road. This front bumper might be some of the best work Dissent has ever produced. I wouldn’t hesitate to say this is Dissent in their prime.

Is this the pinnacle of off-road armor? Rugged, aggressive, and extremly capable, all with a touch of class.

This unit was designed for maximum approach angle, impressive airflow for the new generation of Toyota, easy winch access with multiple entry points, and modularity for those who choose unique lighting options.

Built for those of us who demand strength, don’t want huge weight gains, and depend on real-world functionality to get the job done on even the gnarliest of terrains. Sounds a bit cliché, but this bumper seamlessly integrates form and function with Dissent’s signature look, all in one aggressive package.

This product is still in the R&D phase and will be ready for sale soon.

High Clearance

6G 4Runner Front Bumper Ultra High Clearance

The mustache delete design eliminates the entire lower grille section for increased approach angle, which almost deserves a set of 40″ tires, although 37″ M/Ts don’t look too shabby. This bumper sits very high up on the 4Runner. Although the bumper sits so high, it still retains clean factory body lines. The bolt-on wings feature a design aesthetic that blends incredibly well into the upper stache, in addition to slits cut into the lower portion of the wing. The appearance of the wings alone on this bumper really gives it that classic Dissent look. You can always expect something unique with Dissent; this isn’t just another off-the-shelf tube bumper. No one else on the market designs armor with this level of detail, while also keeping functionality at the forefront.

The wings also provide an insane level of clearance for larger tires and articulation, in addition to an impressive approach angle for front tire positioning on obstacles.

Easy Winch Access

Ultra High Clearance Front Bumper Made For Big Tires

Winch access on front bumpers can be hit or miss.

They either have large, easy-to-use ports, or you’re pinching your wrists in between steel plates to turn the clutch. This front bumper might offer the most convenient winch access ports I’ve ever used.

Both the left and right sides can be accessed through two primary access ports in the front and/or from the top. Winch access from the top is usually rare to see on Toyota’s given the typical front clip design. This bumper provides the most convenient access to a winch I’ve ever used.

The winch plate itself is compatible with most 8.5–12.5k winches. We’re running a Smittybilt X20 on our bumper.

Louvers For Optimized Airflow

Integrated louver panels are featured throughout the face of the core that provide additional cooling for the radiator and the intercooler.

The design feature is not only functional but also offers a pretty aggressive aesthetic. This is one of my favorite design features; it just gives the bumper such a unique look.

You have four louvers in the center plate and then another three towards the bottom.

Light Compatibility

The bumper supports top-mounted light bars or pod light setups.

Pretty much anything you can imagine on top of the bumper, you can run it. There are three slots positioned on both sides for a wide variety of lights. If one of the three slots isn’t right for your set, just drill one where you see fit.

On the lower portion of the core, you have two integrated fog pockets that fit 2″ lights, such as Baja Designs S2, Rigid SR-M, or, in my case, a KC Flex Era 1.

Optional filler plates are available for both light pods (pictured above) or a light bar. I opted for a couple of light pods because I like the look, and the pod-specific filler plate offers better access for the winch.

TSS & Sensor Integration

TSS Compatible High Clearance Front Bumper 6th Gen 4Runner

Dissent has a pretty dialed team in Colfax.

They design and manufacture pretty much everything in-house. That includes the sensor brackets, sensor covers, sensor plates, wiring harnesses, camera extensions, camera relocation kits, and even small black stickers to cover the sensors so you don’t have white (or whatever color) showing through the bumper on the wings.

The TSS bracket, cover, and placement on this bumper are beautiful. Mounted in the center of the bumper, and covered with a 3D Printed cover in-house and pulled together with four pieces of hardware… You barely even notice the TSS is there.

Most bumpers hide the TSS behind the bumper or behind the grille. This one sits right out front, which maximizes the functionality. Killer design integration.

Multiple Filler Plate Options

6th Gen 4Runner Off-Road

Choose from fully open (no filler), light pod (pictured above), or solid filler plates (for light bar) to customize airflow and design.

At first, we were running the bumper with no filler plate, but the grille looked unfinished. After going back and forth on the design for a bit, Ben decided to design multiple filler plates for multiple configurations.

The plates bolt on from the top down with nuts and bolts (mounting points are not pre-threaded, but may be in future models) for simple interchangeability and future customization.

Impressive Approach Angle

Just look at it, the approach is impressive on this bumper.

The entire design sits very high up on the front-end and surprisingly tucked against the 4Runner’s wide body. This unit significantly improves the approach angle versus the factory bumper and most aftermarket low-profile designs.

You’ve seen Ben (the owner of Dissent) out wheeling on Fordyce and Rubicon pretty consistently. Their products are designed by people who wheel and know what works best on the trail. This one was designed for rock crawling, steep approach trails, and technical terrain where every degree counts.

Installation Notes

Winch Bumper 6th Gen 4Runner

The installation is pretty simple, but there are some things to note.

  • Cutting the factory front bumper is required.
  • Relocating the windshield washer reservoir is not required, but recommended. If you want to see what I did, comment below.
  • Cutting/trimming the lower frame rail mounting brackets is required; however, it will not prevent an OEM bumper from going back on.
  • I taped off everything behind the bumper and painted the sheet metal black.
  • Running a TRD Pro Grille will make relocating the camera easier.
  • There is a lot of flex on these new gens, make sure to account for that when cutting the bumper (at least 1″ recommended)
  • Wiring lights on this bumper is extremely easy!
  • Wing size can be adjusted for flares. We are running Nytop flares (same as TRD Pro) to match the bumper width, but Dissent might be able to customize the wing width for OEM flares, Rough Country flares, or others.

Final Thoughts

6th Gen 4Runner on Rubicon

The Dissent Off-Road high clearance mustache delete bumper is a win.

Whether you’re looking to wheel hard or dial in your 4Runner for overlanding, this bumper provides Dissent’s premium build quality and design, precision fitment for multiple configurations, and proven off-road functionality.

This is just what we needed for the 6th Gen 4Runner. It removes the bulky lower plastic trim, giving the 4Runner a slimmer and more functional front-end profile, and a better overall look.

The integration of seven ventilation zones offers better cooling and improves air circulation to the front of the vehicle, supporting high-output engine configurations.

I don’t see too many downsides to this front bumper at all. The only downside is that you have to cut your factory front bumper, but other than that, it’s pretty much perfect.
