Every detail matters, but the small ones are what makes a build. The 5th Gen 4Runner’s OEM lights got better over the years with facelifts and small upgrades, but they always left something to be desired. With all that room for growth, the lighting market has more than enough upgrade options from bulbs to housings.
A solid set of tail lights can really clean up and modernize the back end of your 4Runner. And thankfully, unlike headlights, they’re a lot cheaper to get a solid set. Morimoto has been at the top of the lighting game for a long time. Just look at the latest XB Evo LED Headlights. I’m also running a set of these and they’re amazing. Even more so with the Supercharged Drivers.
So when I saw this Gen 2 drop, I already knew I had to get a set for the 2024 Underground build. The last model year of the 4Runner in this color deserved something rad.

Install Overview
As most tail light installs go, this one is super easy. You just remove a couple plastic panels in the cargo area, and you expose the hardware and harnesses. Within a few minutes, it’s super easy to swap in a new set.
Design & Build Quality
Morimoto makes some of the highest quality lights on the market. This is reflected largely in their extensive warranty and premium price tag.
That said, these are one of the nicest housings I’ve ever had. They look and feel really solid, especially in hand and in person. There’s nothing cheap about them.
I think the design speaks for itself. Just look at how much better these are than the OEM tails. The styling is way more modern and complements everything from a daily driver to a built overland rig. Some tail lights just look funky. The design doesn’t flow as well with the factory lines. The team at Morimoto crushed it with this one. It just works. Really well.
The 3D light blades mirror the newer tails you see on the latest models of nice vehicles. They have two different options for color too. I think the smoked version is the best, but they also offer a red one if that’s more your style.
After a few months of running them in everything from Northern California summer sun, to a freak snow storm with hail and rain in the mountains of Nevada, they’ve held up great. No water or dust intrusion anywhere.
Long Term Impressions
I’m quickly coming up on a year of ownership with these. Having been through just about ever condition possible, they still look great. No leaking or condensation. No fading of plastic or peeling coatings. All the LEDs are just as bright as day one. I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on how they look too. Overall, no complaints.
Who These Are Best For
If you’re on a budget, I get it. These might not be for you. But if you save some cash, these aren’t that much more expensive than other mid tier and premium options. If you want to be the most stoked on the best out there, these are for you. I suggest spending the extra cost and get something with better parts and materials, and a warranty that’s literally unbeatable. Within 5 years, you might even have a new truck. In any case, if you’re on the fence, I would hold out until you can buy a set like these.
Final Thoughts
The tail lights are one of my favorite sets. And I’ve had quite a few 5th Gen 4Runners over the last 10 years. I’ve gotten to a point where I’m super particular about what goes into each new rig and these lights certainly make the cut.
