Made For Off-Road, The New Wolfbox System With 3 Cameras

Dash cameras have come a long way in recent years. I had one in my first 4Runner back in 2017 from Thinkvue. It was mounted next to my rearview mirror, and the video quality was subpar. Even though it was subpar, it saved me in the long run. I was driving one evening with my family, and a vehicle spun out as it was entering the freeway. Due to the circumstances, I was not able to avoid the accident and hit the vehicle. After the dust settled, my rig was totaled, and the other driver was trying to blame someone else for the accident. Luckily, I was able to recover the footage and provide it to the authorities, who ultimately sided with me. I never realized how a small investment in a dash camera would be so beneficial. Dash cameras are ubiquitous in vehicles now, and some even come straight from the factory with them. It is a great tool to have for liability reasons, especially with the number of careless drivers on the road.

The Wolfbox G900 TriPro is also going to change the off-roading experience. For those of us who like to go out on a solo trip and do not have a spotter, this is the one for you—being able to see ruts, rocks, or even over the hill. You know that moment when you are going up the hill and see nothing but the sky out your front windshield? The front bumper camera has you covered. This rearview mirror comes with three cameras, two for front and rear bumper, and a dash camera.

If you want more detail, check out the official install guide.

Step 1. Routing Wires

Routing Dash Cam Wires

I began by running the rear camera cable through the headliner, directly where the rearview mirror is mounted. The rear camera cable is fairly long; by the end, you should have enough slack. I tucked the wires neatly into the pillars as well. Once I reached the rear, I removed three plastic clips, which gave me ample room to run the cables through to the hatch.

Auxiliary Rear Camera Wiring

Having the hatch open, I ran the wires through with the harness that goes to the spoiler.

Dashcam Wiring On 4Runner

At this point, I removed the black plastic that covers the rear wiper. Four 10mm bolts, located underneath four rubber grommets, hold the spoiler in place, which needs to be removed.

Dashcam Wire Management

Once the spoiler is removed, you can continue running the wires for the camera. Zip tie the cable with the rest of the cables to keep it clean.

Drilling Hole For Wires

I drilled a hole in the plastic and used a rubber grommet to prevent the wire from rubbing on the hard plastic. In the picture, you can see where I decided to mount the camera. I decided to mount it there because I didn’t want my ladder to block my view. The G900 does come with a license plate mount if that better suits your needs.

Step 2. Mount Cameras

Mounting Wolfbox Front Facing Camera To 4Runner

I decided to mount the front bumper camera right in front of my TSS sensor. It is the best place to mount without it sticking out like a sore thumb. After a few rides, the camera does not affect the TSS sensor. I used the provided double-sided tape to mount the bracket and then drilled two screws to hold it in place. Running the wires is fairly easy for this camera. Run them through the engine bay and pass them through the firewall. From there, pass them through the driver’s side door frame and onto the headliner.

Wiring Wolfbox With Fuse Taps

I hardwired the unit to the fuse box next to the driver. Below you will see where I tapped into the fuses that worked best for me. It is tough to get in there with an actual camera, but you can see that I utilized the IGN 10A & the empty slot below Fog RR.

Off-Road Review

Wolfbox Main Rearview Mirror Camera Screenshot Quality

The G900 TriPro is the first dash cam that provides the driver with a camera that helps them see any upcoming obstacles that are not visible from the driver’s perspective. I installed the bumper camera in front of the TSS sensor for a sleek look. While on the trails, it has helped me view any rocks, ruts, or any other challenges that were blocked by the hood. You know that moment when you’re going uphill and all you see is the sky? Those days are over with this camera. That nervous feeling of what the hell is over the hill is now gone. I was able to see what was there and kept driving with confidence. That alone makes the Wolfbox worth it.

Rear Wolfbox Camera Screenshot

I put the Wolfbox through its paces by driving through rocky terrain at moderate speeds, and all the cameras remained in place. As I was looking at the screen, there were minimal to no vibrations. Two screws hold the cameras, and they are adjustable to suit your coverage needs. You can tap on the screen and remotely move all three cameras up and down—no need to get out of your vehicle to make minor adjustments.

Image Quality

Wolfbox G900 Digital Rearview Mirror With Three Camera Inputs

The video quality the cameras provide produces great quality footage that you can potentially use for content on social media platforms. People nowadays try to record others while driving. The Wolfbox does that for you.

I would at times try to record my drives while having my phone mounted to my Ram mounts phone mount, and it would capture most of my dash. The Wolfbox has the ideal wide view. You don’t have to stress or put others in danger because you are trying to record and drive at the same time. The camera on the mirror itself has a 4K resolution, and the rear bumper camera has a 2.5K resolution.

As for the front bumper camera, it only supports 1080p resolution. You can connect your phone via WiFi and download the footage or screenshots taken. I have set it at 3-minute loops, and it does not take long to download the clips.

Final Thoughts

Wolfbox Camera On 4Runner

The Wolfbox G900 Tripro is a valuable asset that provides a sense of safety on and off the road—capturing hidden rocks and ditches in real time, to accidents that can help you show proof of drivers who are at fault. The installation is straightforward, as I watched YouTube videos online and saved myself money. Everything provided is plug-and-play; you don’t have to worry about splicing wires or creating your own harnesses. Providing you with the option of hardwiring or simply connecting to your cigarette lighter is a win for those who prefer to avoid tapping into the fuse box.

Its performance on the trails is unique. Giving the driver a whole new perspective, especially for those of us who like doing solo runs. Wolfbox assists as a spotter for moderate trails. There are countless uses for the G900, as it modernizes your rig with the tool of the future.

Off-Roading With Wolfbox Triple Camera System

Things to look out for are overheating. Especially for those like me, who are in very hot climates. During the first week of running the camera, it overheated due to the weather. I live in SoCal, and the temperature routinely reach up to the triple digits. One day, the dash cam would not turn on; it froze on the opening prompt. I had to unplug it from the top and let it cool down for a few minutes for it to work again. I suggest owning a sunshade to prevent direct sunlight from hitting the mirror. The G900 TriPro does come with a super capacitor designed to deal with the heat, to an extent.

3 Camera Display On Digital Rearview Mirror Upgrade

One other thing I noticed is that the dash cam would attempt to turn on its own WiFi. You would manually have to turn it off to remove the big prompt on the display. I have also noticed that it takes photos randomly. I went through the settings, and I did not see a function that would control it.

I ultimately decided to reach out to Wolfbox directly regarding my concerns with the unit.

They replaced the unit incredibly fast and even provided me with a return label for the defective unit so that their factory could analyze it. Companies that take pride and back their product 100% is key to providing great customer service. Since I got the new unit, everything has been great. I would still recommend you get a sunshade, in general.

Overall, I would invest in this unit; the benefits far outweigh the minor issues that may occur.

Luis, great article! I have the 2 camera version of this, and experienced the same issue with the mirror having a lot of “ghost” functions, like turning on the wifi, switching views. What I found worked was to turn off the microphone for voice commands. I wasn’t planning to use that feature. I would have to guess that certain noises through out my driving were interpreted as commands, or said from radio/music/podcasts. Been a non-issue since turning off the mic for voice commands.

Is it worth upgrading from the G900 Pro with just the dual cams? I very much like the addition of the third camera option, especially being able to see all three at once. Very valuable. But an upgrade for one extra camera? I wonder if they could add one via a usb addition… someday.
