License plate frames aren’t an exciting mod, but they’re one of the easiest ways to customize your 4Runner’s exterior. If you bought your 4Runner from a dealership, chances are they gave you a cringy branded license version. Nothing looks tackier than a cheap plastic frame with some dealer name printed in white letters.
While there’s no shortage of aftermarket options, finding one with an OEM+ look and finish isn’t as easy as you might think. Unique Style Racing (USR) released its Stealth model, which is suitable for all the relevant 4Runners, back into the 1980s. They also have other makes and models they offer. Overview
There’s little detail to cover with a license plate frame, but USR did include some nice touches. First, the “4Runner” lettering is raised and glossy. This provides a nice contrast against the matte black frame, in my opinion. I also appreciate that they used an “official” 4Runner font, giving the frame an OEM look.
The second is on the back side, with thoughtfully placed foam pads to prevent rattling and rubbing. I’m a fan of that, as I usually steer clear of metal frames (metal frame against a metal hatch).
On a final note, the packaging was really nice and everything had its place within a foam insert. The hardware was also included.
Installation Overview
Chances are you’ve removed your license plate before, but if you haven’t (i.e., your 4Runner is brand new), the process is very straightforward. While the USR frame has four screw holes, the 5th Gen 4Runner will only utilize the top two.
Step 1. Insert License Plate
Slide your license plate into the frame between the faceplate and the brackets on the back. Then, line up the top holes of your license plate with the top two of the frame.
Step 2. Mount On Hatch
You can either use the provided screws (the top row with security bit heads) or the original screws. Regardless of which you use, slide a plastic cap bracket over the screw before inserting it through the license plate. Once you’ve secured the screws, press on the black plastic caps to conceal the screw heads.
Final Thoughts
For the price, these are a good product, and priced similarly to what you’ll find at your local auto parts store. There’s nothing crazy special about them, but they have a nice, clean look that’ll compliment all of those blacked-out emblem overlays you’ve probably already installed.
I do like the inclusion of security screws, as auto crimes are unfortunately on the rise around the country. Not having standard Phillips head screws makes it harder for thieves to steal your license plate and put them on their car before committing a crime (yeah, that’s a thing).
My only gripe is that the license plate doesn’t fit perfectly in the frame. That’s not a deal breaker, though, as the screws hold everything in place and there are variations in plate designs. I’m sure I could get it perfect with some spacers if I wanted to. Overall, these are a solid option that’s minimalistic and look great on the butt of any 4Runner.
