The Deepsleep Overland Solo Mat – Review

Deepsleep Overland Mattress & Leveling Mat

The Deepsleep Overland Solo With Leveling Mat

Like most of you, when I set out on how I wanted to sleep in the woods, I was lost with all the options. Rooftop tents (RTT), ground tents, air mattresses, and DIY sleeping platforms only scratch the surface of what’s available.

RTTs were immediately ruled out as I daily drive my rig and didn’t want something on the roof. Ground tents are great but can be cumbersome and adds more gear to my minimal pack-out style. That left me needing to sleep in the rear of my 4Runner.

I discovered Deepsleep Overland on social media and decided to give their Solo Mat a try. Since purchasing, I’ve really enjoyed the quality, self-inflating feature, and that it’s designed specifically to fit the 5th Gen 4Runner.

Deepsleep Overland Mattress

The Deepsleep Overland Solo Mat is sold as single sides. If you want to convert your entire cargo area into a mattress, you will need to purchase two of them. I purchased two mats because I like to be comfortable.

If you own a 5th gen 4Runner, you know about the raised lip between the cargo area and the seat back when the rear seats are folded down. Deepsleep Overland remedies this with an optional leveling mat. It’s not too noticeable of a difference with or without the leveling mat, but I prefer to use it as it keeps my sleeping area level.

The price for one Solo Mat is $169 before taxes and any accessories. I bought two Solo Mats and Leveling Mats, bringing the total to $455 with shipping. Deepsleep Overland also offers a plethora of accessories that I hope to purchase and review in the future. It’s a premium price, but I think having a good night’s sleep is well worth it.

Compatibility & Accesories

These mattresses are specifically made to fit various makes and models including Toyota, Ford, Jeep, and Subaru. They even sell tent mats for RTTs. They also offer multiple accessories including storage bags, fans, and window screens.

Set-Up & Comfort

Deepsleep Overland Mattress For The 5th Gen 4Runner

It takes me longer to get a fire going than it does to set up this mattress. The process is simple: take the mattress out of the bag, open the vent valve, unroll it, and let it do its thing.

While the mattress self-inflates, you do have to massage the corners to make sure the foam on the inside is opened evenly. Other than that, there is no actual setup. For the solo camper who wishes to stow gear in the back, you can set up one mat and use the other side for storage. I keep my bins on the outside of the 4Runner, so I use both sides.

Admittedly, I went into this not expecting to be that comfortable. I mean, it’s a mattress in a vehicle. When I laid down to go to sleep, I was blown away. It felt like I was sleeping on my memory foam mattress at home. I slept a solid 8 hours on it, with no rolling around or struggling to get comfortable. It was relieving. Camping is supposed to be relaxing, and adding a good night’s sleep makes the experience that much better.

Final Thoughts

5th Gen 4Runner Cargo Mattress

This mattress is perfect for the minimalist camper or weeklong adventurer.

Storing everything takes up as much space as a sleeping bag, leaving plenty of room for gear. Setting up the mattress takes seconds and is as close to your mattress at home as you can get. Overall, I would highly recommend it as a super comfy sleeping solution.
