The New iKamper Skycamp 4.0 Rooftop Tent – First Look!

When it comes to premium rooftop tents, few names carry the reputation that iKamper does. Their Skycamp lineup has become a benchmark in the overlanding world, and with the release of the all-new Skycamp 4.0s, iKamper has refined nearly every aspect of what made previous generations so popular.

After spending some time installing the Skycamp 4.0 Quad and getting familiar with its features, it’s immediately obvious that this isn’t just another rooftop tent. It’s a thoughtfully engineered camping system designed for people who spend serious time exploring.

While this isn’t a long-term durability review just yet, these are my first impressions after installation and initial setup.

Installation… Easier Than Expected

One of the biggest annoyances with any rooftop tent (RTT) is installation. The Skycamp 4.0 Quad (the largest option) weighs between 157-174 pounds (smaller models as little as 119 lbs.), so you’ll definitely want a second (or third) set of hands to safely get it onto your roof rack. Once the tent was on the vehicle, mounting it was surprisingly straightforward. I got the Quad because it nicely fills out the usable space on my roof rack.

iKamper includes their updated mounting brackets, which are a noticeable improvement over cheap, traditionally available mounting systems. The brackets are much easier to access underneath the tent, require fewer awkward tools, and make tightening everything down far less frustrating than many competing tents. Instead of spending hours trying to reach hidden hardware, the process felt well thought out from start to finish.

The mounting hardware also feels incredibly robust. Nothing about it feels cheap or flimsy, giving confidence that the tent is securely attached even during long highway drives or hitting tough trails. The brackets are designed to fit a wide variety of crossbars and bed rack systems, making compatibility much less of a concern than with some rooftop tents.

Premium Build Quality

The first thing you notice when walking up to the Skycamp 4.0 is just how solid everything feels. From the reinforced DuraCore FRP hard shell to the oversized hinges, heavy-duty latches, and premium hardware throughout, every component feels as if it were designed for years of use rather than simply meeting a price point. And I mean that.

The shell has a clean, modern appearance while maintaining the aerodynamic profile for which Skycamp tents are known. Opening and closing the shell feels smooth and confidence-inspiring. There isn’t any flex or rattling, and the new latch design is very easy to reach.

Inside, the quality continues. The zippers glide effortlessly, stitching is extremely clean, and every seam feels reinforced. The BreathWeave canvas immediately stands out as one of the nicest tent materials I’ve experienced. It’s thick enough to inspire confidence during bad weather while remaining soft and breathable. Nothing about the tent feels mass-produced or rushed. Every detail reflects the premium price point.

One-Minute Setup

One of the biggest reasons rooftop tents have become so popular is convenience. The Skycamp 4.0 series delivers exactly that. After the shell is unlatched, gas struts lift the roof into place before the floor section unfolds and the ladder extends. Within about a minute, the tent is fully deployed.

Compared to traditional soft-shell rooftop tents or even ground tents, the difference is substantial. There are no rainflies to assemble. No poles to sort through. No wrestling with fabric. Just unfold the tent, extend the ladder, install the awning rods, and you’re ready for camp.

For travelers constantly moving between campsites or arriving after dark, this simplicity becomes one of the tent’s biggest advantages.

Massive Interior Space

The “Quad” designation isn’t just marketing. Once opened, the Skycamp transforms into an impressively large sleeping area that feels much bigger than you expect from looking at the outside. The fold-out floor creates a king-sized sleeping platform that comfortably accommodates four adults or a family with room to spare.

The redesigned geometry of the Skycamp 4.0 also increases usable interior volume compared to previous generations. Headroom feels generous, allowing you to comfortably sit upright while changing clothes, organizing gear, or simply relaxing after a day on the trail.

Even with multiple people inside, the tent never feels cramped. It’s one of the few rooftop tents that genuinely feels spacious rather than simply “large enough.”

Larger Windows

One of the biggest improvements over previous Skycamp generations is the increased window size. The larger side windows, oversized entrance, and expanded skylight completely change how open the tent feels.

Natural light floods the interior during the day, while cross ventilation is dramatically improved. When temperatures rise, opening multiple windows creates excellent airflow throughout the tent. The larger skylight also makes nighttime camping significantly more enjoyable, providing incredible views of the stars without leaving your sleeping bag. These changes may seem minor on paper, but they noticeably improve the overall camping experience.

Four Season Design

Although I haven’t yet had the opportunity to test the Skycamp in heavy rain, snow, or freezing temperatures, the materials immediately suggest that this tent was designed with four-season use in mind. The BreathWeave poly-cotton canvas feels substantial yet breathable enough to minimize condensation.

The ThermaSeal floor combines an aluminum honeycomb base with cork insulation to improve thermal performance and help reduce noise. Combined with the insulated hard shell, the overall construction should provide noticeably better temperature regulation than many traditional rooftop tents.

Interior Comfort

Stepping inside, comfort quickly becomes another standout feature. The Skycamp 4.0 is available with either the traditional foam mattress or iKamper’s optional self-inflating air mattress. I opted for their Comfort LT mattress, which has a foam layer and can be inflated. I have to say it is easily the most comfortable mattress I’ve used.

The tent also includes thoughtful touches such as integrated interior LED lighting, storage pockets, improved organizational options, and pass-through ports for power or climate-control accessories, making the space feel more like a compact bedroom than a traditional tent.

Storage Improvements

One underrated feature is the storage space when the tent is closed. The redesigned shell provides more room for bedding, pillows, and sleeping gear, meaning you can leave more of your camping setup inside the tent between trips.

That saves both packing time and valuable cargo space inside the vehicle. Small conveniences like this become increasingly valuable the more frequently you camp.

Is It Worth The Premium Price?

There’s no denying that the Skycamp 4.0 sits firmly in the premium rooftop tent category. It costs significantly more than many entry-level rooftop tents. However, after spending time with it, it’s easy to understand where that money goes. The engineering. The materials. The ease of setup. The attention to detail. The overall refinement.

Rather than simply adding features for marketing purposes, nearly every improvement feels designed to make camping easier and more comfortable. For someone who camps only once or twice each year, the investment may be difficult to justify.

But for frequent overlanders, weekend adventurers, photographers, or anyone who spends significant time living out of their vehicle, the convenience and overall user experience could absolutely make the investment worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

After my initial time with the iKamper Skycamp 4.0 Quad, I’m genuinely impressed. Installation was straightforward, setup was incredibly fast, and the overall build quality immediately stood out among many other rooftop tents I’ve seen.

The larger windows, expanded interior space, premium materials, and thoughtful design improvements all add up to what feels like one of the most refined RTTs currently available.

Of course, the real test will come after months of highway miles, rough trails, changing weather conditions, and plenty of nights spent camping. I’ll be putting the Skycamp 4.0 Quad through exactly that over the coming months, but if first impressions are any indication, iKamper has once again raised the bar for high end tents.
